  1. I am so, SO sorry. I cannot believe how a little dog that I only met once can have touched my heart as much as Jilly Bean did. You were my all time favorite little dog Jilly, and you will never be forgotten. It was such an honor to have met you at Mountain Hounds, and I am so glad that I had that chance. Run free sweet girl. There are endless tennis balls in heaven.

    Love,

    Carol Ann.

  2. While I agree that "allergies" are an overused excuse for people who want to return a pet, there are indeed genuine cases where this is a true issue. I hardly think an individual should be scorned for not wanting to take allergy medicine for potentially the next ten years for a pet that he just met. My DH is severely allergic to cats. As in, he walks in a house with cats and can hardly breathe and his eyes swell shut within about 10 minutes. There is no allergy medicine in the world that would allow him to comfortably live with a cat.

This sounds like an unsolvable issue, and the adopter should return the dog sooner rather then later.

  3. As a follow up question to my post about food ratings verses how the individual dog is doing on said food, here are a few more age old questions!

HOW IMPORTANT IS POOP? Is it the bee all and end all in deciding how a dog is doing on a particular food?

HOW DO YOU DEFINE 'GOOD' POOP? Consistency, texture, color, smell, frequency?

WHAT OTHER CRITERIA DO YOU LOOK FOR IN JUDGING THE OVERALL SUCCESS OF A FOOD? Skin, coat, digestion, gas, eagerness to eat?

  4. I would take both things into consideration, the rating and ingredients, and how the dog does on the food. Having personally been inside a Purina processing facility, I would NEVER feed my dogs anything made by them, even if they do have "nice poops".

So would you like to tell us what you saw that gave you this opinion? Have you been in other processing facilities so you could compare them? An inside view like you have had could be very helpful for a lot of us. Thanks.

  5. I had been using the Kirkland Chicken and Rice for five years, and everyone did well on it. Gizzy was not overly enthusiastic about it, and often need 'extras' on top to get her to eat. After the last kibble scare with Diamond products I no longer feel confident in using the Kirkland food. Switching kibble is difficult because Riley does not do well on wheat. So I tried multiple different brands over a couple of month period and none of them agreed with all four dogs. (slow switch over three weeks) That is until I tried Purina One Smart Blend - Lamb and Rice. THEY LOVE IT!! I mean they run to their bowls and lick them clean. All four have coats that are shiny and soft, and they have the best poop I have ever seen. I am talking firm, compact, roll down the hill poop! All three girls have lost their 'soft' appearance and look very fit, svelte and trim. Gizzy has suddenly reengaged with the family and is playing and wanting attention. Until the switch she was a very old ten, now she has a bounce in her step.

So why am I complaining? Why am I looking a 'poop gift horse' in the mouth? Because it is Purina One that they are doing so well on. I just don't know what to think. I have never been a food snob, and truthfully I feel that some of those extremely overpriced 'specialty' brands are - well, I guess not necessarily as good as their hype. But I worry that Purina One does not get a great rating on some of those online kibble reports. In fact it gets below average. Of course they are comparing it to $3 a pound specialty blends, so really there is no comparison. I just want to have my four on a decent kibble that agrees with Riley's allergy issues. The Purina One is reasonable in price and readily available at multiple sources.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

  6. Lady was panting so hard last night I was afraid that she was going to over heat. She had already had all the melatonin that I could give her and it was not helping. I got a hand towel and soaked one end in cold water and starting sponging her down. After I was done I draped the wet end of the towel over her entire head. Amazingly she calmed down! She snuggled right up next to me and was much calmer the rest of the night. Every few minutes I would turn the towel over to make sure that it stayed cold. I am wondering if the wet towel sort of insulated her ears?

  7. I am very sorry for your loss Wendy. Rocky sounds like he was a small dog with a huge personality. I am sure that he leaves a huge hole in your heart, but I hope that all these special memories you have of him will help to heal that hole.

  8. Am I missing something, or maybe it is stil in progress, but where is the icon that lets us know that there are new replies to a thread that we have previously viewed? You used to just click on that icon and it took you to the first unread post.

  9. Two of ours love being in the water. My DH has taken them in the ocean at Myrtle Beach on a long leash, and they just have so much fun. Gizzy and Lady have no problem with waves crashing over their heads and romping in the water. They even went right into a river in Gatlinburg State Park for a drink. Riley and Specky on the other hand, want nothing what so ever to have anything to do with water! So I guess it depends on the dog.
