  1. It is my understanding that much of the plaque that is removed during a dental is below the gum line. There is no way to safely remove this below gum line plaque on an awake patient. These pups are not humans that you can ask to remain still and not move. The results of a dog suddenly moving with a sharp instrument in their mouth could be very bad. The end result is a mouth that on appearances looks clean and sparkly, but underneath, still harbors the unwanted plaque. IMHO this is a very bad idea for the average dog. It might well be appropriate for a dog that is otherwise unable to undergo anesthesia though.

  2. What are you feeding Sunny? My boy Riley cannot tolerate any food with corn or wheat in it. He has gas that could peel the paint off your walls and poops that looked like pudding! We changed his food to the Kirkland Chicken and Rice (no corn, no wheat, no artificial preservatives) and the gas disappeared permanently within a few days and his poops firmed right up. We have to be careful with snacks and cookies too. He can have one cookie with corn/wheat and he is OK, but two and the gas and loose poops comes back.

  3. I am so happy to hear that Echo is feeling good this morning.

Several years ago I came home to find some blood on the floor. I started checking all three hounds (before Lady) to see who had been hurt. Did not even see it at first, but then realized that Gizzy had dried blood on her neck. Then I saw her ear. Oh my goodness. Pretty much the entire top was degloved. It was a raw bloody mess. We found the missing piece rolled up on the living room area rug. Got her to the vet, and to be honest she was not even sure how to treat it.

Here is the right after we returned from the vet.

As it was healing. They did have to go back and unstick the end as it had healed folded over making a flap that could have caused problems.

Who says you can't bandage an ear?

And now - three years later. Some of the hair came back, the rest just scarred. Never gives her any trouble.

After this happened we started muzzling when we were not home, and never leave kongs stuffed with food anymore. We can't be sure, but we think that Riley trying to take everyone's peanut butter stuffed kong caused this incident. He is very food motivated.

  4. I wonder if velcro would be helpful for the sleeve? I am thinking of the 'tear away' pants that basketball players wear. They have velcro instead of sewing down both outside seams. That way you would start with a flat piece of fabric, then just wrap it around the leg and press the velcro closed as you go. Just Google tear away pants to see photos. You can buy velcro at Lowe's or Home Depot in the fastener department - and it is adhesive so you don't even have to sew it on.

  5. Oh, I am so very sorry to hear about Melissa's passing. I hope that the special memories that you have of her will bring you comfort in the days ahead.

    Hugs,

    Carol Ann

Here is a photo of Melissa along with Kendra, Gizzy, Specky, Riley and Lady at Mountain Hounds last summer. It was so much fun going for our hike in the Smokie Mountains with your family.
