  1. So were you able to find a vet near you to do this? Inu just had his hulled while under for a dental and the rate of return has been much slower this time. I wonder if the vet was never able to get the whole sucker out because Inu kept pulling away? Does Sully fight the procedure a bit?
  2. I'll be thinking of you and beautiful Bonnie Twist tomorrow.
  3. I agree. I also appreciate you posting these pictures, this will be very helpful as it seems PRA is showing itself a lot lately.
  4. Beth posted about Kane and has a great picture of an eye with Pannus, check out this link. towards the bottom of this thread
  5. In your research Kennelmom have you found a vet who is studying this? Like our Dr. Cuoto and OSU is studying cancer? We have F2 (thanks Ahicks51 for the terminology) Molotov kids and our vet saw the beginning of PRA in Inu on our regular check up in September. He's at the point where he can still see cats a whole lot better than me! So I have honestly not begun my research. I'd like to be able to get him and other greys into some sort of study, esp. genetics...
  6. I have two five year olds who have had nothing more than a scaling in their life so far. Inu just had his first real dental on Thursday and Salem is still clear tooth-wise. Point being, I do not think a dental is required every year. Ask your vet what s/he sees and do a dental based on that. We live in an expensive area and we paid around $400 for him. Amazing amounts of $ for the care with anesthesia and pre surgery blood work are included in that price. corn hulling thrown in for free. I think our vet was happy to be able to hull a corn from Inu's foot without a fight.
  7. I am going through that same nervous thing too Nathan! Inu's first dental is tomorrow. Thing is I'm not as nervous because he had emergency surgery this fall at that vet hospital and didn't have the benefits of pre-surgery blood work. He did fine. The vet who did that surgery even mentioned that because he was a greyhound she started him on fluids immediately while he was still under to help flush his system. You chose your vet because s/he knows greys, trust your instinct. Hang in there papa.
  8. Wow, amazing to have caught it to soon. I looked at that picture and just saw a red eye. I wouldn't have even thought twice about it. Isn't Kane a Daytona boy? He should have gotten a dental while he got clipped.
  9. I've had Inu for over two years. While he would chew like mad at a *new* toy until it died from the minute I brought him home I wouldn't say he was playing. He has just started picking up toys that are in the toy box and playing with them, tossing them and wagging his tail. Patience.
  10. I'm a huge fan of acupuncture/chiropractic and other non-traditional treatments but that's for you to determine. Good luck figuring out his balance issues. I will say I attended a lecture given by a vet who presented findings from a study that the number of positives from Protatek was statistically, abnormally high... I had both of my dogs tested and their blood was sent to NCSU. Both for a full panel and then one had the PCR done too.
  11. So you want to call and talk to the vet before taking your hounds in right? I'd flat out ask if they have ever treated a greyhound before. Then ask if they are aware of the blood values and thyroid levels in greyhounds. I bet you get a sense from those two answers whether they are "know it alls" who won't try to be good grey vets or whether they are willing to work with you. I'm so sorry finding a good vet near you is so hard. Frustrating.
  12. Get thee Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound, young lady. I have the hot spot page open on my coffee table as we speak because I think Salem's getting one too. Darn it all though I read it right before going to bed and can't remember a thing. I'll send an email with the treatment advice tonight.
  13. Thanks for the update. feel better Munch-munch.
  14. I guess that is a possible scenario but I'm not a vet. I do trust these numbers posted on the state website. I trust a PCR well above a titer. Testing • Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): Amplification of a specific piece of DNA from the organism of interest. Since Babesia lives in red blood cells, EDTA anticoagulated whole blood is the sample of choice for Babesia PCR testing. Obtain samples BEFORE treatment, since treatment may reduce number of organisms and result in false negative test results. The PCR test used by the VBDDL can detect parasitemias of 0.00000073% or about 1300 fold fewer organisms than microscopy.
  15. Here's a real life example that fits your hypo. Inu was beginning the process to be a blood donor and passed just fine. At the same time (I can't remember why since he is asymptomatic) I sent his blood to a lab out west. His titer came back 1:320 (or close to that) we then sent off for a PCR at NC State and he was fine. So we continue to work with the blood donor organization. Moral of the story, talk to the bank and ask them. If you are nervous about bad blood do a PCR. My thoughts.
  16. Hulling (not full on surgery) has worked for some. It has not fixed our corn situation but it does give temporary relief. I have not heard of surgery, where the dog is put under anesthetic, ever being curative.
  17. There was a thread here recently that got a bit contentious but you may want to do a search for that. I have not taken my dog there.
  18. personal experience only - as long as the powder inside the capsule gets in his body you are good. We often open up the capsules anyway. I also tend to feed the drugs just after or just before their dinner. Helps me remember to give them the meds if the administration of the drugs fit in my routine. We feed twice a day and the drugs are given twice a day. I do not just drop the pills in the food bowl though. Always as a treat right at meal time. yum, bologna or cheese slices. Good luck! I hope he's doing ok now. I'm not a mom of an epileptic hound so I hope someone with experience chimes in too.
  19. How frustrating to have a vet who won't help you out! What about a vet in b-more that is open on a Saturday? Also, while you are searching check out kennelmom's website. She had success with a combo of techniques on Casino's corns.
  20. Just wondering how Katie is doing this weekend.
  21. No words of advice just hope for both you and Henry.
  22. I was just getting ready to PM you and ask about Munchie. I'm sorry you are still searching. I hope you guys get a treatment plan for her soon.
