  1. Andrea: I am very sorry for your loss. Angus was a very handsome guy who exemplified true greyhound spirit. How he ended up lost and alone was irrelevant; he was meant to be your boy.

  2. In 2000, I took my 12 y.o. brittany spaniel to a board certified surgeon for a tie-back for laryngeal paralysis. This surgeon was supposed to be the top one in the state for this procedure. Two vets told me she was in great shape for a dog half her age and would fly through the recovery. The surgeon then recommended another procedure where the excess laryngeal tissue would be trimmed back. He said it would be as effective with fewer complications. Dogs are more prone to aspiration and pneumonia after the tie back. I agreed to it because I wanted to maintain her quality of life. If I had any idea of the hell I would be putting my sweet baby girl through, I never would have let her leave the house. She had major complications from the surgery: infections, dehydration, possible acute renal failure. She lost major weight because she couldn't eat. We spent $$$ on the surgery and $$$$$ on emergency vet care. Most importantly, she was never as good after the surgery as she was before. The laryngeal tissue developed a lot of scar tissue. I will never forget watching while she turned blue and gasped for air when stressed. When she finally crossed the bridge, I couldn't decide which emotion was strongest for me: guilt that I put her through it, relief it was finally over, or sadness that my girl was gone.

  3. The vet just called.

Mazie may be coming home tonight. Apparently after we left she went back to screaming her fool head off and causing a royal ruckus.

It must be a girl cow-doggie thing. Nikki does the same thing with every dental. The first time, I was told her dental would be at 9 and I could pick her up after 4. At 10:15, the vet's office was calling to say I could pick her up at any time, PLEASE!!!!!! :blush I guess it's good to know she doesn't have problems awakening from anesthesia.

  4. I used to go to Dr Kapke. I now go to Dr Henry. He is very reasonable and I have had no problem. He is very grey savvy.

I have gone the opposite way after having some difficulty with treatment of my Dalmatian who lived to 10 weeks shy of her 15th birthday after the change. So to each their own. Dr Kapke has been nothing but great with my Dal and greys. He always gets us in in a timely manner, does NOT recommend unnecessary tests or treatments, explains all options and is a very compassionate person. I hate to see a doctor get a bad name that is unwarranted and fueled by rumors.

No rumors. Just 20+ years of experience dealing with vets on the southside speaking.

  5. A friend's previous vet did not recommend heartworm preventative from November - March. When she took her dogs in for their heartworm checks in the spring, their 15+ y.o. pup was positive. We had a weird warm spell in early January that year - just long enough for mosquitoes to hatch and infect her dog. Given the pup's age, they did not treat. Now, she has a different vet and keeps her dog's on preventative year-round. That kind of heartache is not worth the few dollars a month that preventative costs.

Our vet has always recommended prevention year-round. He believes even one case is one case too many.

  6. Walter, please continue your work from the bridge by helping your fellow greys to find homes. Until you are with your family again. p.s. I think you should send your family a really good sign letting them know you are ok.

  7. I take my guys to Meridian Vet Clinic on 135 at County Line Rd in Greenwood. They do a very good job with greys and they are very reasonably priced also. There is a vet in Greenwood that you ABSOLUTELY MUST AVOID. This vet is supposedly grey savy but recommended dentals 3X a year for a very old grey. I have heard he has lost young & healthy greys during anesthesia.

  8. So many people talk about bravery, honor, integrity and selflessness. However, their words seem so inadequate when compared to your boy's life and actions. May you find some peace and comfort knowing that he continues to serve and protect even at the bridge...until you are together again.
