  1. I suggest e-mailing Dr. Feeman through Greytalk with the results you have posted. He is a veterinarian, and we aren't. :)

    Dr. Feeman

I already emailed him, thank you. I had contacted him two days ago and he agreed to look at the numbers when I got the fax. I have not yet heard from him.

BTW I know the general GT'er is not a vet, however many on GT have had dogs with hypothyroid and so I posted the numbers for those folks who can compare their dogs' test results and treatment.

That's great that you have already contacted him. :) I have a hypothyroid grey who has been on thyroid meds for years, but I wouldn't feel comfortable trying to interpret someone elses dog's numbers. No offense intended. I hope your Monty does very well.

    Thank you,

how long did it take for the vet to get the right med dosage? Is your dog on a steady dose? How often do you need follow up blood tests for thyroid levels?

    thanks!

    Karen

Renie was started on a fairly low dosage Soloxine .6mg and it has never needed to be increased. We do complete bloodwork every 6 months, but for the first 6 months we checked very often, I believe it was monthly.

  3. I cried after I left her at the vet this morning, after a million goodbyes and kisses she was put in a cage and just stared at me the whole way as I walked out the door as if to say "why are you leaving me here?". She is such a homebody and gets scared and anxious very easily, my heart broke for her.

The good news is I just spoke with the vet and surgery is done, she made it through and came out of the anethesia without a problem. :)

He glued the wound shut instead of stitches :huh .

I will be picking her up in a couple hours to bring her home. I want to give her something extra special for dinner tonight, she has got to be famished, any ideas? I was thinking a fast-food hamburger but I don't eat fast food and don't want to give it to her if it might upset her tummy. Maybe I will just cook her some chicken.

I just can't help but to think this is "the beginning of the end", though. :( Please wish her many more months of quality life until (if/when) the cancer metastasizes. I love her dearly and she has overcome so much in her life, she certainly has lived each of her 14 years to the fullest.

I know it is hard but try to not think the worst, not all cancers metastasize. Sending prayers. :hope:grouphug

  4. The best way I can explain is that without knowing except by instinct, she is trying to vomit for some reason. Something has her tummy really messed up. I would go outside and also in the house to see if you can tell what she may have been eating on or chewing on.

With such an extreme amount of grass eating and drinking I would probably help the process a bit with some hydrogen peroxide. Edited to add...don't do this without checking with your vet or an ER clinic.

  5. I would avoid the pool altogether. You really can't control water drinking if the dog is in the water. This can be a nasty infection. It is in public pools due in part to small children in "swim diapers" being taken in the pool. This is why I never go in a public pool of anywhere. It takes diligence to keep a pool clean.

  6. I don't have any advice about capsule supplements, but wanted to add that you can use natural sources, like chicken feet or beef trachea/gullet as well. You would need to give a whole lot of it, so I wouldn't use them to replace the supplements you are giving, but perhaps in addition as a little treat sometimes.

I get the chicken feet at oriental grocery stores, and the trachea/gullet you can order online here: http://www.greentripe.com/.

I'm now the official GT "alternative feeding" weirdo.

    :lol

  7. Congratulations on your adoption of Presto. :)

Since you are taking your boy to a vet who has his own greyhounds, he will likely make suggestions for this first exam.

For my dog I would want a good physical including manipulation of joints, a fecal, urine test and baseline blood work.
