  1. One of my girls ate 2 banana peels through her muzzle while at my mother's one time. No ill effects that time.
  2. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. I'm also sorry because I can't be of any help of where to get supplies for a better cost - I'm sure there are others here who can address that. I will suggest you get a muzzle on her to try to keep her from messing with the dressing, etc. Also, I'd put in a 1/2 a muzzle cup (you'll have to cut it) or just tape up the lower portion of the muzzle to prevent the licking. With just a muzzle, she can still get ahold of things and lick, but personally, I'm not comfortable having them in a complete stool guard (cup) all the time - so I'd try to keep the upper portion/her nose uncovered, but be sure the lower portion is secure. At least that will help keep her from removing the dressing before "schedule". Good luck ...
  3. I'm sorry you're having to deal with/watch this. Unfortunately, I don't really have any suggestions, but I will be watching this thread. My mother's 13.5 girl is a VERY picky eater. Mom is about to pull her hair out trying, all the time (literally) to figure out what Gracie will eat this meal. Most of the time, nothing. She was at least lapping yogurt or cottagecheese. Mom told me the other day she wouldn't even eat the yogurt. She's so thin... Good luck, I hope someone has a good suggestion for you -- and I might suggest to Mom to see if it will work with Gracie. . Kay
  4. I had a vet tell me that even diluted, Listerine contains some ingredient that is harmful to the dogs when swallowed - it was over 2 years ago when this happened, so, unfortunately I can't remember what ingredient he told me. I was going to try diluting and using to brush teeth, but since this, I haven't yet tried it....
  5. One time at my mother's, we both had eaten a bananna for breakfast and had left the peels at the back of the counter (mom puts them in her flower garden) while we ran out for just a bit (mom didn't want to traipse out to the garden at the moment). We left the 7 greyhounds loose in the house -- all MUZZLED. When we got home, I immediately started looking for what my countersurfing girl(s) got into - praying to find NOTHING! I did see "something" on the floor, just a very small something. Of course, I immediately picked it up, took a bit to figure out just what it was. Then I looked around the corner -- the bananna peels were GONE. Not a speck of evidence anywhere other than the small bit of stem I found. Not even a crumb on her muzzle. So, she ate 2 full bananna peels, only, through her muzzle. I don't think she had any help either, I believe it was all my Snotty Nutty! She was fine, and I imagine Pave will be fine also.
  6. You aren't too sensitive at all. You are a human with feelings and personally, I wish more people felt the same. A couple of blocks over from me is a large pond and the wildlife to go with it. Every spring there is a pair of ducks that wanders around the end of my block. I can't remember how long ago it was (time flies and I can't keep track!) but the female was also hit crossing the road. I felt so sorry for the male - he just kind of wandered around lost after that. I was afraid he was also going to be hit. Just the other day I saw a pair of ducks waddling down the yards across the street. Now, I have no way of knowing if it's the same male, but I like to think it is and that he is happy with a new mate. I'll hope the same for the male in your area.
  7. Hi Judy -- Welcome! I lived in Ozark, Al for 10 years ... where do you live? Tell me more - I haven't been back since .... 1996 (I think it was) ... but hummmm . maybe I should make a visit back again! There are things I miss about being there! Kay PS - I suppose you should probably PM me if you're willing to tell me where in Ozark you live! PSS - I just noticed that you can't PM! (sorry) ... if you want ... e-mail me at greytdogsks at yahoo dot com (remove the spaces, replace the at with the appropriate symbol and replace the dot with the appropriate symbol)
  8. One protective cover I've read about - though I haven't tried myself, so the method of making it stay on would be trial and error.... maybe tape to the fur... but .... Using one of the split end, plastic tampon applicators. I've read that it fits over the end of the tail well and with the split in the end, air can still circulate allowing for healing and since it's plastic it helps protect if it gets whacked again.... How to make it stay on would/will be the challenging part .... as mentioned before, and others have mentioned ... probably some tape to the applicator and the tail/fur ... then cover up the applicator and way up the tail with vet wrap ... Might be worth a try at least .... Good Luck! Kay
  9. Sorry, I won't really be much of any help, I'd probably go to the vet and talk to them ... Here is my somewhat similar story --- Cool, will be 11 early March, a couple of years ago, one day he was just, basically, incontenient. He was leaking pretty much all of the time. I put him in a belly band for protection. I'd take it off him in the morning and it would be absolutely SOAKED and he'd be leaking. I took him to the vet, when the band came off, he was a constant, small stream, leaking. They did x-rays and ua's etc. All was fine as far as they could tell. They gave me an antiinflammatory and we made an appt with the chiropracter. After a couple of doses of the antiinflammatory things got better. The chiro did say he had some misalignments in his spine. After the chiro, he's never had an issue of the same magnitude again. I try to take him to the chiro every few months -- he's due to go again actually. He does have brief, minor instances of incontenience on occasion - very unpredictable. He's in a belly band when I'm gone most of the time, just in case. So, I'd probably go talk to the vet about all possibilities... Good luck
  10. Thank you Theresa -- and everyone. I'll pass on all of your suggestions. Interesting happening just now --- I played the video in the "A very vocal greyhound" thread ... Edie was back in the bedroom, I am in the kitchen (multiple rooms away). She came dashing out with the sounds --- as did the other dogs! She was quite perky and interested. I played it multiple times and she stayed right here! It stopped and she went back to the bedroom. I started down the hall, she was standing in the hall, I called her name and she came to me (which she usually doesn't do during an "episode"). Then, I played the video again, she came out ... then wandered over and got a drink. I interacted with her and directed her to the couch (her normal "perching" place!) .. she jumped right up and she's still there right now. So these things come and go -- and it's been this was for a month now. As I mentioned, I'll pass on all suggestions and I'm sure mom will get things checked out but, I'm sorta leaning towards some anxiety .. just can't, for the life of us, figure out the trigger.... Thank you!
  11. Yes, this initially seems just like a stormphobic dog response. The panting and behavior are not all the time - just episodes. She has been to the vet, just a couple of weeks ago - she has no ideas, nothing stands out. Not sure the last time a UA was done --- no, haven't taken temp (no thermometer to do that here!) .. though, the vet might have at her visit ... I'll have to ask mom. Will have to watch for the stool observance - not sure if it will be possible too soon! Snow is DEEP right now! Will have to see if mom has any benedryl to try. She can be sensitive to changes, she is a bit reserved. I did forget to tell you this: Dec 2006, she (and mom's other dogs) stayed at my house, with my girls for 2 weeks (mom in hospital). Then we ALL stayed with mom for 2 weeks. Then I brought Edie and Missy back to my house (left Gracie with mom) for the first 3 months of 2007 (mom out and in hospital and trying to recover). She was absolutely fine at my house. She has done a M&G or 2 before when mom was at my house with them .. she's been fine. Well, a bit nervous since she those were all she'd ever done - and they are usually nervous for the first couple they participate in .. but she went to strangers for attention. She's still back in the crate right now - but comfortable and not panting. Hopefully she'll be OK tomorrow. Thank you
  12. No accupuncture around here that I know of .. maybe in KC, but that won't be happening for quite a while with the weather! No gas ... not sure about bowel movements, though, I think they've been fine - I just haven't noticed today (think she hasn't gone today - but not positive about that).
  13. OK, I've put off writing this because I'm not sure I can really explain the happenings so anyone can even pretend to understand, but I will give it a try ... This is about my mother's dog - Edie KL Ole Aunt Edna . She'll be 8 in March, mother adopted her in November 2005. Edie came into adoption as a stray. On Thanksgiving day, in the early afternoon, I noticed Edie standing in my mother's sunroom panting. None of the other dogs were panting. My initial reaction was that she was too warm - with extra people in the house and the oven cooking all morning, the house was warmer than normal. The dogs hadn't been out in a while, so I put her outside to see if it would cool her off - and to potty if needed. When she went out, she wandered into mother's flower bed (20' or so from the door) and I had to call multiple times to get her attention and for her to come in. Not normal for her - she's one that goes out and does her business then comes right back to the door to come in - if she leaves the door at all. When she came in, I paid closer attention and realized that it wasn't a "warm" pant -- it was a big, open mouthed anxiety type pant. So, we tried to figure it out. There were 2 "new" people around. My brother's girlfriend - who had been to the house briefly a time or 2 before and my niece's boyfriend (early 20's, nice guy, not trying to interact with her or anyone, if they didn't want it). Also, we had expanded the dining table and added a leaf for the extra people and moved her eating stand and put our "buffet" table there. So we put the furniture back as it was - seemed to maybe help a bit, but not much. I took her back to her crate - in my mother's bedroom, back, out of the activity - and gave her a melatonin. We just left her there, she stayed and relaxed for a while. After everyone left, she was still "strange". She went out later and we actually had to go out and GET her to come in. The next morning, she seemed to be OK. She came right out and up to me, tail wagging, happy to get pets, etc. Since Thanksgiving, this has happened several times. No pattern (that we can identify). Mother has had to go get her out of the yard on many occasions. Sometimes she has to actually pick Edie up from a laying position, so she has left Edie's harness on her for convienence. Mom even carries a leash with her, but it makes no difference to Edie. I got here to mom's last night (Friday 12/21). All was well. All was OK first thing this morning. Sometime (wasn't watching the clock), we noticed Edie standing in the livingroom, back to the room, sorta looking at the garage door, panting. But she did respond when we called her and she came over. She's been fairly interactive today - on the couch, laying on a bed in the livingroom. It started really snowing shortly before noon and is building quickly. We put the dogs out early afternoon (all 7 of them) ... some pottied, some just played, Edie was in the play group, though she didn't really play, but she did trot around some - and I think she never pottied. A while later --- 3pm or so probably (not really watching the clock), Edie was panting again and wandering around. Thinking that she might need to potty, and known to be willing to potty in the house, I bundled her up and put her out - by herself. She wandered off. I watched her every step. She'd look up and around as she wandered but she didn't stop and potty. Eventually she got clear to the other end of the yard. An area where mother said she has stood and looked around and/or laid down and mom has had to go retrieve her. The snow appeared to be 3 - 4" or more by this time. She stopped and stood, looking around. She circled .. and laid down, in this snow. I ran back to get better dressed, grabbed shoes and a coat to go get her. I took out one of my dogs to see if she'd respond to her. (no). When I got to her, she was laying there shivering. I got the leash snapped to her harness and had to pull her up. She willingly walked with me until I got close to the house, then she wanted to go back into the yard. Of course I got her into the house. She has been back in her crate, or laying in one of the bathrooms - one with no windows. Today, laying with her back to the door, close to the tub with her head between the tub and toilet. Mother said she has laid in this bathroom before, panting, with her back to the door, but in the past she's been laying by the cabinet. Oh, I forgot, this morning when she was panting, I was holding her and her heart was racing - but then, that does usually happen when you are anxious about something. On Thanksgiving, at one point, I thought her eyes were dialated, but when I comparied them to one of the other dogs, I changed my mind. Tonight, mom kind of dragged her out of the bathroom to see if she'd eat dinner - tonight she turned dinner down. Mom said she's only done that once or twice before, but she's usually eaten even during one of these "episodes". (she could stand to miss a meal or 2 - mom does over indulge them). Oh - mom just took her food back to her in her crate and she seems to be eating now. She has been to the vet -- standard bloodwork all came back fine and normal (a couple of weeks ago). Heart has sounded fine to the vet - couple of weeks ago. Mom lives in a small town .. "country" vet. They are open to ideas, but don't necessarily have a lot of equipment available to them for testing -- and at this moment in time, can't say what mom would be willing or able to do .. immediately, nothing, due to weather. Edie seems fine health wise, she typically eats fine. All mom can think of, immediately prior to Thanksgiving, Edie had started going back to her crate, spending more time alone ... but mom didn't think a LOT about it ... At this moment, she is back in Missy's kennel in mom's room, currently not panting. We've closed the bathroom door (not sure why mom did that but ...) If you have any other questions ... I'll try to answer them. At the moment, this is primarily a concern and "inconvenience" since she isn't "sick" or .. but right now we are just extra troubled by her going out in this snow and just laying down. We'll go get her, but ..... (I ran out, no snow boots (didn't think to bring them with me), just my "hiking boots" and no socks! - while I didn't really get cold, the snow went into and packed all over my boots!) Too bad I don't really have "snow clothes" anymore - this looks like it might be a fun snow to play in! Sorry for this being so long ... thank you for any advice or thoughs you can share. Thank you, Kay
  14. The skin will shrink up - most shrink to be pretty much not noticable. Regarding using neuticals ...... I truely believe they are for the people, not the dog, I think the dog really doesn't care. Personally, I'd wait for the shrink....
  15. HELLO Zachary's mom (the former Tyme while in the kennel)... I took those pictures of that beautiful boy you currently see on greyhound-data!!! He is (was in the kennel) such a good boy! So sweet, happy and bouncy, but not 2 year old crazy. Hearing about them being happy in their forever homes makes working with the adoptables in the kennel, etc. all worth while! Thanks so much for joining here and loving Zachary! Please, keep us updated and ... post those pictures!!
  16. Could she be playing with someone and it is a claw "cutting" her? I've seen that happen before. RE: injuries with muzzles on... if it's a clean "cut" ... I would be more likely to think claw .. or something sharp on a muzzle (the buckle ... ??). If it's a tear .. they can get ahold of hair and probably if they push hard enough, they could get a nip of skin which could then tear. Personally, I don't like leaving my guys muzzled with a cup, but maybe you could the lower part of the muzzle, leaving the top and top front section open (kind of like 1/2 of a cup) ... makes a TERRIBLE mess when they get a drink - but maybe, IF it is someone getting too rough ... it might make it so they can't get a hold of fur/skin. Just a thought...
  17. Thank you for continuing to investigate. I can't imagine what the experience was like, but since you said he was sort of "trance" like and/or that he didn't respond to your voice, it leads me to believe it is something medical, or at the very least, some type of "reaction", not an "on purpose" behavior. Gabe is a good boy and deserves the efforts.... Thank you
  18. Hi Valerie! Sorry I didn't see this sooner! I was just out at the kennel this morning, I had to help the ladies change Diamond's splint/wrap! She was so wiggly and happy, they couldn't get her to lay still so they could do the work they needed to do! I went to pet her and help hold her, then Carol had to get up to get something (Carol was holding/petting her head) .. oh man, she wiggled, twisted, wagged her tail, kicked, etc.! So funny. So, I ended up sorta laying down beside her with my arm over her to try to get her to be still! She is SOOOOo sweet and sooo beautiful! You are getting a real sweetheart! I'll be so anxious to see her get in a home and settled. Thank you for spoiling Gabe so much. Carol told me today just how great he looks! From the pictures above I agree, but since she got to see him in person, she knows even better. I hope his feet are OK/getting better. Keep up the fantastic work and the spoiling! I was in Norman on the 18th. I totally forgot about you going down. I might just have to check with you the next time they send me down ! Take care ! Kay
  19. Thank you all ... I appreciate all the information. Luckily, he's not extremely "bad" with his anxiety. He mainly pants a lot and will go into my room and wad up the throw rugs. So really, it's not a "terrible" problem, the primary problem is, as I've read from other folks, he will NOT go outside and potty at all. I'm just hoping that I can "calm" him enough that if/when I notice a lull, I might be able to hurry Lee outside (on leash) and get him to do "something" before we go to bed -- and also, that maybe I can go to bed before 1am (or so) since I have to go to work on Thursday! Thanks again! I really do appreciate it.
  20. Yeah, I did the ace a few years ago with Lee. As I was told, it has to get into them before the adrenilan kicks in. So, I gave it to him in the morning -- 2 tablets (I can't remember the dosage of each pill). He was OUT . It scared the **** out of me. I could shake him, yell at him .... and NOTHING. So, I left him alone. About 2 or so hours later, he started waking up. Then he was like a drunk dog. He had to follow me downstairs - so I had to help him so he wouldn't fall. I didn't like his reaction. I didn't give him any more until around 4pm. However .... by the time the BIG booms went off ... he was JUST as frightened... so I decided I wasn't going to do that to him again. He'd apparently have to be totally out for it to help him. So, yes, I question the effects of the melatonin. Yes, I do have rescue remedy .. and I will possibly give him both ... hopefully the rescue remedy will help the melatonin work .. the rescue remedy doesn't seem to help him, at least not for more than about 5 minutes. The 4th is just sooo much fun for us around here! Thanks!
  21. OK, one of my "kids" is quite frightened by the nasty fireworks in my neighborhood (my insensitive and "above the law" neighbors partake of the extremely LARGE and loud fireworks - they shake my house). We (myself and the dogs) do usually spend the evening, into the night, in the basement with the A/C, fans and the TV on... but these fireworks are so large you can feel the house vibrate. Anyway, I have some melatonin this year and am just wondering about the dosage for my 70lb boy ... how much at any one time and how much over the course of the day. I don't even know if it will actually help him, since I have it I figure I'll give them a try, I just don't want to risk an OD or any other possible "issues" with it. Thanks! Hope you all have a great 4th! Kay
  22. I take cimetidine myself (generic version) for acid indigestion ... and it works with each tablet taken. Takes a bit for it to "kick in" after taking it, but the burning stops.
  23. My vet also has a concern that when a person gets this vaccine for their dog, they won't need to do any thing else to assist with dental health (I know, a majority of people DON"T do anything now .. but ... ). Also, the fact that it hasn't been used in the general canine population long enough to really know if it works or what might happen. I think I'll just keep brushing.
  24. Heal quickly sweet Skittles... DeVon .. I've no personal experience with this but .... from some of the things other folks have written, even with the current cost of gas you could save $$ even if you drove to one of these other vets! And, since people are posting their personal experiences, you know these vets do a good job! Wanna make a road trip this summer??!!?
