I tried once, but he was afraid of the dremmel. I will need to keep trying, to build up his tolerance to the sound and vibration. Thanks.

She may have injured it on the track
We think that is what happened. He came directly from the track (the now closed Twin River), Christmas 2008 about a month after his last race, and we didn't notice anything at the time. But later it got infected and the toenail just dropped off. A round of antibiotics cleared it up and the toenail grew back, but at this odd angle. We get it trimmed at the vet, but I was hoping for a permanent solution. But I guess since it doesn't seem to cause him pain, it's not a huge deal.

In the scope of things, I know this is not a huge deal. Especially seeing what other pups are going thru. And this is not the first time I've posted images of this toenail of Finn's. But the vet has said the only real option is to keep it trimmed (and it's time for a trim now). But has anyone heard of other things that can be done for toenails that grow at odd angles?

Sending prayers for a continued good recovery.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and Stampede.

Due to space limitations, crates would be difficult. But we can feed them in separate rooms.

I can't believe this happened. Tornado and Finn just got fed. They get 2 cups of their kibble in the evening. Their bowls are apart from one another- separated by a large chest freezer. For whatever reason, as they were eating, Tornado went over to Finn as he was eating and attempted to get his food (Tornado had been "served" first, so he did have his own). Finn, of course, defended his food and they had a short fight. Tornado came away dripping blood (although on close inspection it's just one nick on his nose and stopped bleeding quickly).
As a side note, there was a bag (double bagged) of chicken bones on top of the freezer, out of their reach and waiting to be taken to the outside trash, in between them. But Finn wasn't going for it and neither was Tornado. That's the only thing I can figure as to the reason this happened. Otherwise, I am stunned. Tornado does have space aggression, fear aggression, etc, but Finn was no where near him and had not made a move to go near Tornado.
Any comments or ideas about this? I can't muzzle them while they are eating. Will I just need to stand between them when they eat now? My DH was with them and stopped it quickly and I came running too....

I found this pinned topic to be very helpful, when we decided to change what we were feeding our boys: Grade for Dog Kibble
I was amazed to see that what we thought was a good kibble had a poor grade.

I am so sorry. May he RIP.

I'm saying my prayers for all of you. Hoping the remaining time (however long it is) is fabulous and full of wonderful memories.

We took Finn to the vet this a.m. There is no dislocation of the toe and no issues with the toenail. The vet trimmed the nail back quite a bit and suggested we just watch it.
-
I never even thought of that. Thanks. I'll have to ask them that, when we see them.
