  2. Hey Stephanie! I can't believe those pups are 11 already!!! Time sure does fly! Thanks for popping back in to say hi! Sorry to hear of your losses.
  3. No, not yet. She just ran the test for Von Willebrand's. After those results came back neg. today, I was wondering if a TBD could be the cause and if a tick panel would be appropriate.
  4. Molly was scheduled for her spay last week, but the vet did not feel comfortable proceeding. She did a clotting test beforehand, and rather than the "less than a minute" it was supposed to take for her to clot, it took over 90 seconds. She repeated the test and got the same results. She said her PT time was 2x the normal. She sent out for a Von Willebrand's screen, but it came back negative. Anyone have any suggestions on what else to test for? The vet left a message about the negative VW screen as she was not officially in the office today but wanted us to have the results right away, so we expect to speak with her tomorrow evening about what's next.
  5. Holy cow, Sue! I'm just seeing this thread now. Good to hear she's doing better. No advice, but here's hoping it was just a weird, one-time thing. Keep us posted!!!
  6. Diane, I am so sorry to hear this news! Godspeed, Will! You are among good company up at the bridge.
  7. Diane, I am so sorry you had to lose another one! You have a heart of gold! Godspeed, Grace!
  8. We adopted you on your eighth birthday, a bounce from a family that said they were moving to Florida (but never did). You were with us for over six years. You were the one that would "bark" with me - the other hounds thought Mom was nuts! We knew it was time when you stopped trying to take your stuffies out with you on potty breaks (the lion with the dangly legs was your favorite), when you had real trouble standing when eating (when we could get you to eat, which was a challenge), and when you ceased to drive me crazy with your "Cookie Shakedown" - multiple trips to the patio door each evening, hoping if you went outside *one more time* I would give you *one more cookie.* Thank you for your patience with the kitty, the puppy, and Abbey. You were a gem! We will always miss and love you, big guy! September 26, 1997 - February 28, 2012 P.S. Now that there are eight Barnett greyhounds up there, maybe you can have your own race to see who is the fastest!
  9. Jonathan, Thanks for posting the pics of Molly's trip with you! We are so very grateful that you were willing to help us bring her home, and you will always be a special part of her life when we tell her story! She tried friending you on Facebook when she joined, but not sure what happened... Anyhoo, she sends you kisses (and no more wet car seats!!!) ----- Molly is scheduled for her spay just after she turns a year old. Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply - I appreciate the input! We are now with a new vet, and she is of the opinion that we should wait util then - as opposed to our former vet who chastised us for not having her done at 6 months. Please keep fingers crossed for us - it's schedule for Friday the 13th (we didn't realize till later). We're hoping that means good luck and not bad!
  10. Had our vet appointment today. She said that ordinarily they do not like to do them together. But after looking at her teeth, she said that it's just a little tartar, that her gums look wonderful, and there's no evidence of peridontal disease so she would be fine with doing a touch up on her when she gets spayed. They will take the precaution of a doing an antibiotic injection beforehand and sending us home with some pills afterward. I also asked her opinion on the "when to spay" question. The other vet (the one we typically use for the dogs) gave us a hard time last visit because Molly hadn't been spayed yet (she was 8 months old then) and told us it should have been done "months" ago. The vet today said she likes to wait at least 10-12 months old on the bigger dogs so they can finish growing. So we have her surgery scheduled for just after her 1 year birthday. Didn't realize till later that it's going to be on Friday the 13th, so we're hoping that doesn't mean bad luck! After almost 20 years of going to our vet, I think we're going to permanently switch to the one we visited today. There are currently no doctors at the other clinic that we "click" with - all of the good ones have left. The one that they usually schedule us with makes me feel like a neglectful, newbie dog owner, and the other guy there thinks greyhounds are ugly and stupid and doesn't know why anyone would want one as a pet. They do have a third vet, but she's part time and hard to see, and though she's nice I don't feel she's on the same wavelength sometimes. The new vet already loves our cat, and told us today that we should have brought Molly in when she was just a pup - regardless of whether she was a patient of hers or not - as she has never seen a gh puppy and would have loved some snuggle time and puppy breath! P.S. Thanks for all of the replies and especially for the explanation about the bacteria.
  11. Thanks for the replies! We're taking her to the other local vet next Saturday for a consult, to see what she thinks.
  12. The dental would not be extensive at all. Just a little tartar on the back molars, but I thought that since she'd be under for the spay, why not clean the teeth up too right away? There is another vet here in town where we take our cat for care. I think (need to call them to find out for sure) that they will do both at the same time. We have been with our dog vet for 15 years and I'd hate to switch to the other one, but.... Then that brings up another question: if we do get the spay/dental done at a different vet, is it a big deal to go back to the usual one? Do vets hold grudges over stuff like that?
  13. Our vet will not do a spay and a dental together. They tell me that they feel it's risky because the dental is dirty, and the dog would be under anesthesia too long. Is this a common train of thought? Which is riskier - a longer time "under", or going "under" multiple times?
  14. Molly, who is now 7 months, has been eating Kirkland's puppy food since we got her. Lately, though, she has patches in her fur. Took her to the vet to make sure it wasn't ringworm or something. Vet said it looks like dry skin, and thinks maybe she's not getting enough of one of the nutrients (though she couldn't say which one). She recommended switching to Purina or Science diet, but that we should stick with puppy formula. Anyone have any puppy food recommendations? Is it possible that we could just add Missing Link or something to her diet?
  15. I think that's excessive as well. Our vet does have different "tiers" of office visit charges. For a full exam, it's one price. For a wellness exam (typically done when they do their heartworm testing or administer vaccinations), it's a lower price. Lower price also on a follow-up visit.
  16. What a beautiful tribute!!! My condolences to you and your family.
  17. Haven't seen you on here in a while! So sorry to hear about Gigi. Cancer has taken so many of our beloved hounds. She has good company where she is now. Godspeed, girlie! And hugs to you!
  18. Hi Brian, here's the rest of the statue. My camera is not the best, so the pic doesn't do it justice. We got it about 8 years ago at a gift/patio furniture/furniture shop in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I've seen it online somewhere too. Around $100 IIRC - it's resin. Sarah, "brat" is right! Did you get your statue from Taylor Creek to?! Greyt minds, LOL... I did not realize gh's go into heat so much later than other dogs. Why is that?
  19. Thanks to everyone for their replies! Looks like the general consensus is before the first heat. I like the idea of the "first lost baby tooth" - that will be a good reminder. Sambuca - no contract, just a verbal promise from us that we intend to honor. It's been so long since we've had a GH puppy (almost 15 years), it's like learning everything new again. I don't remember much, and I'm sure a lot of advice has changed since then too as we learn new things. Bonus Molly pic - kitty was sitting there first, and Molly shoe-horned her way in.
