  1. Thank you very much folks, for the kind words and thoughts. What I do see now, is that Milo (my grey) is kinda "coming out of his shell". More loving to me, happier around the house. Was not obvious to me, but maybe Beauregard's aggressive demeanor was intimidating to Milo. Never said I was a fast learner!! Thanks again Dave
  2. My best friend and constant companion for the last 10-12 years has died in his sleep. Beau and I had a very close bond, and traveled all around the state together, on many adventures. I loved him dearly. Excellent watch dog ; that was the Chow Chow part of him. He could be vicious. The Golden Retriever side was soft and loving and warm. And extremely handsome. I knew he was running out of time; he turned 14 this month. Eyes were bad, hearing really bad (I used hand signals for him), kidneys were failing and he was losing a lot of weight. He was a tough dog, and tried valiantly to keep up with my 2 younger dogs. The really sad part, is that he died while I had him in the local kennel ( my daughter came up from S Florida to weather the hurricane, and her kids were nervous around Beau). I was not there for him, or was any of his pack. I feel badly about that. We buried him in my front yard, where I can visit him every day. Thanks for listening. Dave Gotta share a video or two. First one is my favorite.
  3. If they fly into your hair, they are "palmetto bugs" That's about the worst - I swear they go into attack mode, as soon as I spray them! Not fun, when you are laying in your bed at night, and see one on the ceiling.
  4. "Are they true roaches or my namesake?" Heck, I don't know anymore - just big, fat and ugly. Not many creatures bother me, but these do! "Maybe there is a higher pitched noise that he can hear," I like that train of thought, Fruity. I will break out the cooking spray soon, and give it a test.
  5. Living in the woods here in Florida, we get cockroaches in the house. I spray them with Raid. But Milo gets alarmed, and even barks at the sound of the spraying. And these are just short blasts of bug spray, half-way across the house from him. So the smell is not causing this strange behavior, just the sound, as far as I can tell. Not a big deal overall, just very bizarre. Any thoughts on something happening in his previous life as a track dog, that would trigger him? TNX Dave
  6. My dog sounds similar, but after a few months, I think he understands, and I understand him better. Hate to jinx myself, but the carpet cleaner has been put away for weeks now!
  7. I am not expert, but it sounds like your dog is the alpha in the house - not you. Challenging you when you try to get him off bed, for example. AFAIK, most dogs want to be the top dog, and will challenge others to take that position. Short answer , but lots of info online.
  8. After 5 months or so, I still have to force Milo outside sometimes. (Pushing on his butt, mainly) And then he is always happy to be out. Oh, and he is much more willing to go out, if I play with him, and get his lazy butt off the floor.
  9. Nice doggies! I lived in Melbourne area for 35 years. Got too crowded, moved up here.
  10. "until she's assessed as preydrive distractable" Hi, we're from the Government, we are here to help! Is that how bad it is down under?
  11. Price sounds good, for what you got. I had my other dog in for annual shots, and 4 days of boarding, and it was surprisingly low: $150.
  12. Well - you are not alone. Maybe walk him only in your yard? After 4 months I still have to push Milo out the door sometimes, but unless there is something new in the yard, or funny noises, he is very happy to be out.
  13. Echogrey - this is internet. Some times you need thick skin.
  14. Sounds like rough play, which is too much for a 3 year old.
  15. We have our fair share of fights at my house, sometimes with blood, but not normally. Food aggression is not un-common; I feed my dogs separately. And hand feeding treats to all of them at the same time can result in pinched fingers on my part. Realize the two dogs need to establish a pecking order, with the humans always the top dog (do as I say, not as I do!). I consider them fighting for their dominance as normal behavior. One can hope that this fight did establish the top dog, and you won't see the behavior again. I will put up the occasional fight or bite, but not when it turns deadly. I put down a really nice pit bull (perfect behavior with adults and infants, but dog aggressive) a few months back, that tried to kill my golden retriever, after having been in the pack for a few months.
  16. "Why do men take neutering personally?" Balls! said the Queen, if I had them ... I did have my Gold Retriever/chow neutered years ago; did not lessen his aggression at all. (I am not sure he has ever forgiven me. ) How old is Milo? 4-5 yrs And how long have you had him? 4-5 months Is he an ex-racer? Yes, I got him directly from the owner. Is Milo new or was he there before the other 2? Milo is the newest pup. No urinalysis done. Damp spots on carpet could be from drooling or licking dogs, maybe. They are not obvious puddles. I caught Milo this morning peeing on the carpet, because he had been inside for 14 hours or so, and I left my BR door open (I have been closing it at night just so he wouldn't pee until I take him out in the AM.)
  17. Is it working? Well ... as long as I put the bowls away, yes. But now, I randomly find (small) wet spots on my carpet, and just today a pee puddle on kitchen floor. I hate to castrate the poor boy, but might be the next logical option.
  18. After 3 months, my male still pees inside sometimes. I think it is more of a dominance issue, than anything else. (4 other dogs in the house these days). Recently got some urine cleaner from the grocery store, so I spray where he pees. Too soon to say it changes anything...
  19. "Simple solution - put down the food - pick all bowls up as soon as each one gets done eating." Yes Ma'am - that is what I am doing now.
  20. "However allowing a kid to mess with him like that .......don't think thats fair to expect him to tolerate that." Roger that - it was stopped ASAP.
  21. Here is a new one for me: three dogs in the house. I use separate rooms while feeding. After eating their share, they run to the next dog's bowl and see what is left over. But Milo the GH also intentionally pees into the others bowls! What a whacko. (Yes, new behavior) Not sure if he is trying to assert himself? Or may be due to the house full of my grandkids that are here for a while. My 2 y/o grandson was fondling Milo's testicles yesterday - I am sure Milo did not like that, but he put up with it! Time to break out the carpet cleaner again!
  22. Oh, and I forgot to mention, one reason I took him to the vet was to ensure that I could safely start him on Advantage Mutli, mainly for flea control. But it is supposed to keep all/most parasites out of his body, including hookworms. I have used something similar for the dogs for years, and I can remember ever having any serious parasite problems.
