  1. What a cutie!

Sure she can be a grey with that tattoo! My daughters coyote hunter has one too. She looks adorable. Welcome home Poppy!

Hi heartdogs, please tell me about your daughters coyote hunter. Charlie my Greyhound was not on a track and is broader than most Greys. Someone mentioned to me a couple of months ago that he might be a coyote hunter, i had never heard of that before. He came from Indiana but lives in Massachusetts with us now. He has no tatoos though. Does your daighters dog look like a Greyhound or lurcher?

  2. I'm pasting this link because it is a raw diet company and it has a calculator. Just add your dogs weight, activity level etc. easy.

I've been feeding raw for about 7 yrs, I sell it where i work, many brands, i also belong to a co-op that comes to my area every 5 weeks where i buy about

80 lbs of what they have on sale that month. I buy different meats plain but also HVM , healthy variety mix, that has some veggies and organ meat.. Makes it simple and i know my pups are getting everything they need. btw it comes frozen and i thaw out what they need for a day or two.

My dogs have gorgeous coats and it has helped immensely with one of my dogs stomach issues, she can't have chicken, every dog is different.

I know someone here mentioned tripe, i second that. Not the kind from supermarkets that is bleached. You have to find another source. Co-op, high end pet food store. Tripe has natural probiotics and i feed trachea too as gross as that sounds, it has natural glucosamine as does most cartilage. I also add pumpkin.

I at times mix proteins and make sure they get organ meat as it has nutrients that plain meat does not. Liver is rich so small quantities.

Once you get used to it and see how well your dogs do, you won't go back. Looks like a lot of support here so good luck.

Oh, last but not least i use salmon, sardine, flax or coconut oil, the unrefined raw kind. Very easy on the tummy.

  3. Bones do that. Most people don't seem to feed their dogs bones these day, but I remember when I was a child (30 odd years ago) that it was common to see the white, very dry poops of dogs that were fed bones. I would say not to worry too much as long as it isn't taking days for the poop to pass.

    I agree.

Sometimes a little pumpkin will help, only a tbsp or so and then there is tripe (smelly but good for them), But Scullysmum is right and nothing to worry about as long as he is fine next poop.

I'd try a little organ meat before metamucil if you want. Particularly liver is rich and might counteract constipation, a little goes a long way.

I know, I'm feeling queasy about it too. I'm having my neighbor stop in and check in on him.

Oh great about the neighbor! Obviously you care a lot or wouldn't have asked this question. It will all work out. Also Macoducks advice is good. Hoping you love your new job.

You probably already know this but have your neighbor meet Bronto a couple of times and give treats just so he knows her/him and feels comfortable. I worked in a Greyhound Shelter and know some dogs take to ppl right away and others it takes a little time. I don't know Brontos temperament but Charlie my Grey is the wary type at first.

Please remind your neighbor to not let him escape. I know, I worry too much, but safety first. :)

I'm known as a helicopter mom. I worry too much too at times. :flip

  5. Sorry but it makes me queasy thinking a dog would be alone that long. Dogs are after all pack animals. Could you go 10-12 hrs without a bathroom break? Yes Greyhounds sleep a lot but then I am wondering...After being gone so long @ work, how much time will you be able to spend with Bronto before you go to sleep? Just my thoughts on it. Just thinking having someone come in to spend a little time with him would be best.

  6. I work full time also and i don't crate my two dogs. They are not destructive and are happier i'm sure going from one bed to the other.

I have someone come in everyday and let them out after 4 hours. Maybe that's excessive but that's how i am. She charges me only $10.00 a day and yes i could use the money in my pocket but i would not be comfortable leaving them home for an extended period. I hope you can find someone to help you out for Brontos sake. I think it would give you peace of mind too. We do what we have to do. Congrats on your new job and thank your husband for serving too!

  7. For a low cost, grain free food i would suggest Taste Of The Wild. Also, you can add coconut oil to Cindy Lou's diet. I switch between salmon or sardine oil and coconut oil. Neither of my dogs have had any dry or flaky skin from this long, cold Winter. You will have to melt approx a tbsp of coconut oil in a little hot water 1st and mix into the food. Easily digestible and very healthy. I use unrefined raw coconut oil. T.O.W. was involved in a recall a couple of years ago because it was in a facility that had tainted food. None since.

  8. Quick question-

Is it necessary to transition a dog between flavors of the same dog food? Willis is on the lamb and rice grain free Taste of the Wild. I think he might do better on the salmon recipe though (still Taste of the Wild, grain free)

WIthin the same brand i never thought there needed to be a transition. The formula is usually the same other than the protein. Unless your pup has a sensitivity to a specific protein, i'm always of the thought that different proteins are best. I wouldn't want to eat the same thing daily. Mix it, since you have some of the other left. I feed raw, started 7 yrs ago because my German Shepherd can't digest kibble. Started My Greyhound on Acana kibble when i adopted him but switched him to raw too after the 1st month. They get different proteins on a regular basis. I can't feed chicken because my German Shepherd has issues with it. TOW is a good food, not sure where they source the salmon, hopefully it is wild caught. I'll have to check it out.

  9. That kind of destructive chewing is an anxiety response from separation anxiety, especially as he doesn't do it when you are home. Are you doing alone training? He will need intensive alone training, and it might take quite some time. Please be aware that he can injure himself badly if he tries to break out of the crate.

Oh joy! We used Zylkene when moving from the Netherlands to the US. It worked miracles for my two galgos and cat! When I got to the US I wanted to order more, but it wasn't possible to get it here (I think there was a trademark problem or some other legal problem that prevented the USDA from permitting its distribution in the US). The cost to order from UK was prohibitively expensive. I tried the US version from Biotics Research, but it wasn't the same. I'm overjoyed to see that Zylkene is now available in the US!!!

I'm so happy you have greyt experience with Zylkene also and now you can get it here too! I've been spreading the word on this to ppl i know and the one who has tried it is happy with the improvement with her rescue who was so frightened of everything. Pretty amazing. I was told by my vet that the casien is what calms them just like a nursing kitten or puppy along with the magnesium. For ppl there is a magnesium supplement called "Calm" They might want to add the casien :bgeorge

  10. "Has anyone heard of Prairie dog food? We just brought our first greyhound home and have been slowly changing his diet from the food he came with. He was on Purina when he arrived and now he is up to 1 1/2 cups of Prairie and a half a cup of purina twice a day. We also have added fish oil to his food. His dumps are fine ,but he is drinking more water. Is that normal? The food was recommended by a pet store whose orientation is healthy and all natural. There is no corn, wheat or soy in this brand. I would love any comments."

Yes it is Natures Variety Prairie and Instinct is their grain free food. Good food. Good as long as your dog does well on it.

  11. My vet has suggested a natural supplement and it is truly fantastic!!!!! I did use Nature calming treats,( we sell them where work) It didn't seem to do much.

It is called Zylkene, you can check it online. It contains casien and magnesium. I use it for my 12 yr old Shepherd who has a bit of Alzheimers, with "sundowners" She got extremely anxious when the sun was going down, pacing, panting. I went to the vet for a sedative, i didn't want to use one but i wanted her to be comfortable. She suggested the Zylkene, Her size of 65lbs takes the larger dose of 450mg. It takes about 2 days to see results. Day 3 i was amazed!! Back to her happy self with no sedation.

I told my mgr where i work, she has a rescue who is very anxious and will not come near ppl. Day 3 for her, she came right up to me wagging tail and took a treat from me. So i may get it for Charlie, my Greyhound nearing thunderstorm time of year and 4th of July.

It has been in the UK for awhile from what i understand, someone from UK might be able to tell you. We now have it in the US and i believe Canada also. No prescription needed but it is less expensive at my vets than online. I pay $50.00 for a 30 day supply inc tax.
