Have you tried a different protein in the Natural Balance? It could be that or perhaps because Iams has a lot of grains and Natural Balance uses Sweet potatoes and your pup isn't used to that yet. Did you transition slowly? Mixing the Iams and Natural Balance for a week to 10 days?
I love Fromm and Canine Caviar that above posters mentioned but it all depends on what your dog can handle. Fromm makes grain free and foods with healthy grains. Canine Caviar is excellent but can be pricey, you stated you had a budget. Check out price of Canine Caviar online or local pet stores and see if it is within your budget.
I swear by green beef tripe adding it in my dogs food daily, it comes in cans too by Tripett. It has natural probiotics. It is stinky but very healthy.

My friend and neighbor put her beloved Vico to sleep yesterday. I just wanted to honor that sweet ever smiling Greyhound Vico. He died from hemangiosarcoma. You will always be in my heart. Charlie will miss you too as you were his best friend. Run free sweet boy!

I just noticed Charlie licking his foot a lot. Upon inspection I saw his dewclaw pad is hanging. No blood but an obvious nuisance. I doused the pad with a natural cleanser I have for skin problems, made for dogs. I'm going to get some vet wrap and put a gauze in it and wrap loosely. Anyone have this happen to their dog? I'm wondering if it will eventually fall off. Yes, I will call the vet tomorrow but just want to know what to expect. I did notice a thread about this from 2011 and they did say to keep it clean and wrap it. I doubt this is an emergency. Thanks for any more advice.

Just wondering if antibiotics would help since your Vet said it was caused by a bacteria. Does she know which kind? Just hoping for an easy to fix diagnosis.

I feed raw also and neither dogs have had dry itchy, flaky skin. In fact their coats are beautiful even with the very cold Winter and heat in the house in the North East. I do add Grizzly Salmon oil and raw unrefined coconut oil alternately. I only use 1 to 2 squirts of oil even though the directions say to use 4 to 5. I'm thinking that might cause loose stools. Works for my dogs.
I wanted to add.... I know many can't or don't want to feed raw so a good kibble with not a lot of grains, at least use kibble with healthy grains no corn or fillers. Still add the oil.
Some ppl use olive oil which I used to think was good but in researching this it seems it is not readily digestible for dogs so they won't get the benefits as humans would.

I don't use Proin either, instead I use a cloth doggie diaper for my 12 yr old female who has occasional letting go of the bladder when sleeping. Medical issues were ruled out by the vet first.
I did use Proin once and only once as she vomited from it. Then I read the side effects and decided against it anyhow. Now I have 3 doggie diapers and female pads I insert so there is always a fresh one available. It keeps her dry and she doesn't mind it. In fact I think she is happier as she doesn't like wetting herself. Who would?
Do bring Beth to the vet to rule out other issues.

First of all, congrats on adopting Greycie. While I am no expert, I did work as staff for a Greyhound shelter for 1 1/2 yrs. Although I gave great attention to all the dogs I gave special attention to the shy ones.
It takes awhile, 3 days isn't a long time as you know but it may take less time now that she is in your home and you are the only ppl she will see. Barring any unusual health issues I would hope you will see her coming out of her shell even just a little soon. How long? A week? Maybe longer. I know you must be anxious for her to feel comfortable but just be there. Let her come to you, don't push too much. Of course you need to get a routine potty routine.
MY story of Sam the Greyhound. Sam, I was told, was so shy that no one walked him in the field and not to let him out in the fenced area as he wouldn't come back, just let him out in the small area to do his stuff.
After everyone was out for their break I would let them 1 or 2 at a time run in the fenced field as long as they wanted. I DID let Sam out there too, it didn't matter if he took his time on a nice day. I would sit out in the field with him, he knew I was there. :-) He DID always come back whether it be a 1/2 hour or 10 minutes. Soon it was routine.
I would walk the dogs one by one and never did take Sam. He was too scared. One day, I think a month, maybe more, I put the last Grey in their stall with the exception of Sam. I started to leave and heard this low bark. Sam was that you? I went over to his stall and he put his nose to the leash. I took him out for a walk that day and ppl mistook him for another dog because Sam would never go out of his stall like that never mind let you leash and walk him. I walked him happily every day after that and then he was adopted :-)
My Charlie was at the shelter about 8 months. He was soooo afraid of ppl and would hide at the back of his stall. No one adopted him.
Day one of bringing him home we had to sit outside for 20 minutes just to get him into my house.
He got to know my husband quickly and after a couple or more visits from my son and daughter in law, he no longer hides in the other room but runs out to greet them. Charlie has been here for 2 yrs and is the most affectionate dog we've ever had. If I remember correctly, it might have taken a month before he settled in. Although it may have been longer. I hope you are patient enough because it will be worth it in the long run.
Maybe you could try some natural calming treats to see if that helps. Naturvet makes a good one.
My older dog who is a German Shepherd is on Zylkene because she has a bit of "Sundowners" a condition from a touch of Alzheimers. It is casein and magnesium supplement and instead of her nervousness when the sun goes down, she is now at ease.
I'm not suggesting that really but hoping some time will make Greycie comfortable. I'm glad you've had greys before :-) you know some of their quirks but don't they and we all. :-) Please let me know how she does. Sorry for being so long winded and lastly hang in there!

How are Charls stools? I always watch my dogs stools, it lets me know how their tummys are doing.

Sometimes a growling stomach can mean an upset stomach. Give it a day, give Charl something easy on the tummy ie boiled burger or chicken and rice. I hope it passes soon.

one of my dogs has EPI, exocrine pancreatic insuffiency. She is doing great now after losing almost 8 lbs over the years and no vet had the answer. She is on pancreatic enzymes and had also gotten some B12 shots for a month. Here is a site that helped me immensely in case your pup has this issue. A multitude of info on stomach issues and it is a site you can ask questions. I also have been purchasing my enzymes through here for years which has saved me a lot of money. EPI4dogs.com I gave this site info to my vet who also passes it on to others with a similar problem.
PS My dog, Rhea also has SIBO and is on antibiotics for this, she has finally put her weight back on and at age 12yrs old she is feeling great!

Interesting! Many people on this forum have Spanish greyhounds (galgos), but I've only seen a few GT'ers with Irish hounds. Come to think of it, *I think* you're the first person I've heard of in the U.S. with an Irish hound (ones with Irish racing lines, yes, but none actually from Ireland). Is there someone from your group who vacations in Ireland, and brings the dogs back on his/her ticket?
I was staff at the shelter Leo was adopted from. They do get some Irish Greys in on occasion. The woman who started the shelter in 1985 has close ties to someone in Ireland. She goes there about once a year, or did.

Ack, he just had another accident, with the same little white spots, and a LOT of vomit. We're going to go grab some tapeworm meds now, I feel so bad for my poor dog!
Bring a stool sample to the vet to check for worms. 9 cups is WAY too much food. Transition Leo next week to something like Taste of The Wild as above poster suggested. I was staff at that Greyhound group, not sure if i ever met you but get advice from the kennel mgr. Jen She may also be able to check a stool sample or certainly the vet that comes there.
Let us know what happens, it will all work out, hang in. Leo is beautiful btw :-)

talk to the vet not the receptionist, you deserve that. Yes, do try some boiled burger and rice. Hope Ernie feels better fast, hang in there and again call vet and get some metronidazole

That does sound like a lot! My neighbor has a 90 lb Greyhound who was feeding that much, 4 cups. He got chubby on that at his less active age of 11 yrs so she cut back to 3 cups daily, 1.5 each meal, and adds steamed veggies or canned dog food. What does the bag of food suggest? Keep in mind they usually tell you to feed too much. I would start slow and cut back a little to start with. His stools should be better hopefully or maybe the lamb is too rich? I feed raw so i can't help out with kibble amounts, i forget what i used to feed.

I don't know how old Sam is but as they age they can become incontinent. My female on occasion has sleep incontinence, She where's a cloth doggie diaper with a pad inside to absorb. They make them for males, belly bands. Easy to use and comfortable or so she tells me
I don't know the answer to the Proin question.The diapers are Brampton Simple solution, you could google it.

i do feed raw so my supplements are tripe, natural probiotic and trachea which has natural glucosamine. I have a 4 yr old Greyhound who is doing great and a 12 yr old German Shepherd who runs around like a 5 yr old!

How old is Koli, that makes a difference as far as incontinence. My 12 yr old German Shepherd has incontinence at times when sleeping. She wears a diaper, made for dogs, at night and doesn't mind it. UTI should be easy for your vet to know but moisture is best,ie canned food added to diet. You paid for a life time of vaccines? Please look into titre scales. It is a blood draw and determines if there is enough vaccine in their system. I doubt my dogs 1 who i mentioned is 12 yrs and my 4 yr old Greyhound will ever need another vaccine. Protocol for vets has changed from yearly to every 3 yrs now anyway. Please do not over innoculate. I only get their 3 yr rabies shots now because it is mandatory in my state. Good luck and let us know. After thought: i gave my German Shepherd 1 pill of Proin a couple of years ago, she vomited so i never gave it to her again. It is supposed to tighten the sphincter on spayed incontinent females, i opt for the diaper as i said.
Not a fan of pro plan sorry, i believe there are a lot of grains in it, am i right? Grains aren't necessarily bad but stay away from corn glutens and wheat glutens. Check dogfoodadvisor.com for ratings and go from there.
I don't know the answer to the Proin question.

Yes, the stools are important to know about, as 4MY2Greys mentioned. I have a German Shepherd with EPI but it is under control now and she has put her weight back on. Keep us posted.
