  1. Another welcome to the greyt & wonderful world of greyhounds! Here is our food experience with 2 greys; we adopted both in 2006. Our first grey (Connie) came to us on Nutro Lamb & Rice and we kept her on that successfully for 7+ years. When we added our second grey 6 months after our first (you do know that you can't have just one? wink, wink), we didn't even think to ask what they had been feeding him. He came straight from a kennel environment to our home and did fine on the Nutro. So for seven years it was Nutro kibble twice a day (plus a tablespoon of full fat yogurt in the morning to control gaseous emissions and a squirt of flax oil in the evening to improve their coat). Then...Nutro changed their formula! Ack! I opened a new bag and could tell immediately that something wasn't the same. I returned it for a refund thinking that it had gone rancid in the store. Then I found out from the Nutro rep in the store that indeed they had "improved" the formula. We started to look at other options at that point. Ultimately we've ended up with a semi-homemade diet that is working for now and I found a kibble that will work in a pinch if I haven't done the prep needed for the homemade food. Have fun with your new hound when you get her! And don't forget - we like pictures around here!
  2. It's so hard when they go unexpectedly. Extra cyber hugs to you, DH, & Tiel.
  3. Hello & Welcome to GT from Texas! You will find so much good advice here on greyhounds - and a lot of other topics! And there are many 'horsey' people here too. Looking forward to more pics of Wasabi. She is gorgeous!!
  4. We have two hounds (1 female & 1 male) and they both sleep on beds on the floor. The beds are "equal opportunity" beds and they seem to select one at random each night (whomever gets there first picks which one they want). The beds are identical (from Costco) so there isn't a "good" one or "bad" one. By morning, we often find them in the opposite bed from the one where they initially fell asleep. We are fortunate that neither has space aggression issues or this might not work as well as it does for us. Chase, our boy, was very keen to get on the bed when he first arrived, but we had decided even when it was just Connie that we couldn't have a dog(s) as large as greys are in bed with us and still get good sleep. We kick each other enough as it is! No need to add 4 or 8 or more legs to the mix! He learned quickly that the beds on the floor were just fine.
  5. Oh, go ahead and laugh! We laughed a ton - at ourselves and at her. She looked hilarious with her "head gear" but I think secretly she did enjoy the attention and that she had a built in pillow for all of her bed fails for a few days!
  6. Our Connie had it done at 9 years of age and has been so much happier ever since. We did have a huge challenge with keeping her from licking after surgery. I work from home so it wasn't a matter of not being supervised. We have never had any success using the cone of shame with our greys or IGs and Connie was no different. It just doesn't work with their heads! We have muzzles but in our panic to stop the licking we didn't think of it as an option. So we improvised... A strip of egg crate foam mattress secured with vet wrap to keep her from being able to reach around past her shoulder. Worked like a charm. It healed very quickly, thankfully!!
  7. Yep. Chase has tendonitis in one leg that acts up whenever he runs or plays too hard or we walk a little too far on our walks. Scared the begeezus out of us when it first happened! The initial diagnosis was a year or so ago and our vet prescribed a course of deramax with total rest for about 4 weeks. Also we did 2 laser treatments for inflamation that did seem to help. Chase is almost 11 now. The tendonitis hasn't flared up nearly as bad as the initial incident but we do try to limit his opportunities to run full out these days. Hope Greta just needs a couple of rest days and it is nothing serious.
  8. She's adorable!! Congrats on your soon-to-be new family member.
  9. She is stunning! Congratulations on expanding your family, just keep in mind that one is almost never enough!
  10. Kevin & I are so sorry for your loss. Maya was a special girl.
  11. So sorry to hear this. She is very loved and will be missed.
  12. Thinking of you and Leigh and Maya this morning. Hope you get good news from the surgery. Connie & Chase have their paws crossed for Maya. Here is a pic that captures Maya in my mind from our dog park days many moons ago. The look on your face that day was priceless when you saw her! She looks so proud of herownself. Keeping positive thoughts and prayers for your girlie.
  13. Your hounds are gorgeous! Like you, I lurked for a long time and just recently started posting more. I love this site and all the lovely houndies!
  14. I am so sorry for your loss and that Monty had to leave you. You wrote such a descriptive tribute about him that I feel like I know him, across the internet, and what a wonderful dog he was.
  15. What a lovely tribute to a beautiful girl. I'm so sorry it was her time to say good-bye.
  16. Hubcitypam - do you have an opinion as to why so many greys not do well in a daycare or boarding situation? I hear it a lot here on GT and some of our grey-owning friends prefer a pet sitter to boarding, but our two greys have not had any issues going to a boarding kennel. Maybe we are just lucky? It seems like greys would be used to being in a kennel environment from the track, but maybe once they get used to a home env it's tougher for them to deal with a kennel? Or maybe the other breeds that can be loud and disturbing is different from their structured life at the track kennel? I'm just curious - and thankful ours will go to the kennel when we infrequently need to board them!
  17. I'm very sorry for your loss of Queen. She was beautiful. They never stay with us long enough.
  18. Connie is shedding a lot now. She is almost a 365-day-a-year shedder, but it seems worse when the seasons change. We had a short burst of cooler air here in TX over the past week or so then the temps cranked up again in the 90s yesterday. Her bum gets fuzzy when it turns cold. She is brindle. Chase (black and white tuxedo) doesn't shed nearly as much, although he gets a little "fuzzy bum syndrome" in the winter usually.
  19. Howdy from the greyt state of TX! Long time lurker here, I found this site many years ago and finally joined towards the end of 2012. I still lurk a lot, but have learned so much from this forum and its members. I decided I should get with the program and introduce myself and our pups! My husband & I live in the DFW area. We adopted two greys in 2006, about six months apart. They are both 10 now and doing pretty well for seniors (no one has yet told them that is what they are). I've been around long enough to know the so I hope I can get the bucket to cooperate. Connie (Connies Fullofit - and yes, she is full of it!) is our beautiful brindle babe who is usually getting into some kind of mischief. She can be bossy and knows what she wants! She is our stuffy-killer extraordinaire. But really she is just a happy, happy girlie! Chase (No Worries aka Ace) is a tender soul who always leaves the house dressed for the finest party but when he gets home from a night of carousing... He is stunning if I do say so (without bias, right?!?), so he's fairly used to having the compliments come his way as well as the flashy box. That is enough for now. I am truly greytful to everyone that posts info in Health & Medical and Training & Behavior and I hope I can contribute too with some of our experiences. Cute & Funny and Everything Else cracks me up. Everything is really greyt around here! Jennifer
