  1. My neighbors keep asking where Spirit is so I NEED a brindle Greyhound.  :nod  Nate's night time routine involves potty trips heralded by playbows and barking. I can't Mom-voice him back to bed or ignore him because we'll wake my sleeping sister across the hall.  If, for some truly bizarre reason, you'd like AnnIE to learn to add demanding nighttime barking to her repertoire, she can come here for a respite visit, learn a new tactic, and then return home, since we all know you'd end up missing her "wif your whole entire heart". :D

  2. I looked at a number of those items when I got now 6 y/o Nate, also with PRA.  I adopted Nate when he was 1.5 years old and his sight was pretty much gone at that point.  So many of the options looked clunky and I couldn't imagine them working well or being tolerated well by the dog.  Nate has a great sense of location in familiar locals--home and yard.  When we travel, I lead him around the hotel room and he's OK after that.  Always in unfamiliar locations he's on a leash, of course.  Any time he's leashed, Nate just plows ahead with enthusiasm and he clearly views it as the responsibility of the human on the end of leash to make sure he doesn't run into anyone or anything or step off curbs, steps, etc.

Every now and then at home he'll become disoriented.  When that happens, I'll see him carefully, hesitantly moving around, kind of groping.  At those times, I go to him and lead him to one of the super familiar "gounding" areas like one of his beds, the door into the yard, his crate.  That seems to resolve the problem and he's oriented again to the map he has in his head.  When something new is added in the yard, I walk him to the item and he seems to add it to his mental map--he really amazes me.

I'd really worried that he might run into things and damage his eyes but honestly that's never happened.  He did once bonk his nose on a corner and get a small cut on his muzzle, but he's never actually hurt himself.

  3. What a compelling and heartening set of messages and pointed coincidences. Max is taking good care of the humans he loves. :heart

Steve is beautiful.  Welcome to the fun of "dressing" a black dog.  They look fantastic is any color!

  4. Nate is my first dog with any kind of space/interaction issues.  He's blind, which may be part of his need to protect his space.  He's never bitten, but his snarl and lunge with teeth bared is a real attention getter. As others have said, I'm careful to avoid known issues--I don't pet or approach him when he's on his bed but call him to me instead.  Fortunately, he is very food/treat motivated.  We've settled into a comfortable, affectionate relationship as his humans learn to respect his needs and as he comes to trust and relax more.  It's a slightly more formal relationship than those I've had with less complicated hounds but it is no less rewarding.  Our rules are:

Don't bother him in his bed.
Call him to you for pets, leashing up, or going out.
Don't try to take things from him--trade up with a nice treat.
I can't do anything about the robot vacuum touching his toes. :lol He tells her off regularly.

For a creature who guards his own space zealously, he has absolutely no respect for anyone else's space. :D

  5. I'm so sorry for your loss. :grouphug  Take comfort in knowing that Max was enjoying his life, loving it, and loving his humans, right until the very end.  Take comfort in the wonderful memories you build with him.  Fare thee well, Max.

There is a line from an old song that comforts me in loss and grief:  True love shall never be broken.
