  1. Nutmeg fell apart when Baz died, but she had only been here a short while. I ended up having to get another grey, for her sake, before I was emotionally ready. Although I intended to get her a young, lively playmate, I came home with Scout, a dignified senior. He gave Nutmeg the stability she needed and she bonded closely to him. It took me much longer, but that was okay. He was a bounce who needed a home.

Scout died last summer and I thought Nutmeg would go nuts again, but she did much better than I expected. I think keeping to a strict routine helped, and going for lots of walks and rides in the car. A dogsitter had been coming in to help with Scout in his last months, and I kept her on to maintain a constant in Nutmeg's world. But I again got another grey much sooner than I thought because I was the one who just couldn't bear the house being so quiet.

Whatever happens, you will come through it. Sending hugs to you and your beloved pups.

  2. Glad Chick's gained a little weight. All paws crossed here for the test results.

In the past, Diane Burpdog has suggested adding some pasta to the food as an easily digested source of calories. You could cook it up nice and mushy, maybe in some low-fat broth?

Here's one of the recipes for weight-gaining "satin balls". There are variations, but most of them are even more fatty, with cream cheese and/or peanut butter.

    5 pounds ground meat

5 cups Total whole grain cereal

5 cups oats (slow cooking type)

    2½ cups raw wheat germ

    ¾ cup oil

    ¾ cup molasses

    6 egg yolks

    5 packets gelatin

2 ½ tablespoons Solid Gold Seameal supplement

Mix up, form balls, freeze, feed as treats or food supplement.

Mix all ingredients together thoroughly like you would a meatloaf. Roll into balls no larger than 1 inch diameter. Divide into at least 6 separate containers or bags. Freeze. Thaw as needed for feeding.

  3. Hello to you and the Chick.

How much water does she need on a daily basis to keep her from getting dehydrated?
I just looked this up online, since I've always been kind of curious about this, too. Of course, it varies from dog to dog, and also on how active the dog is, the temperature, and the kind of food the dog eats.

Several sites said 2.5x the mass of food (example: 20 oz. of dry food x 2.5 = 45 oz. water) but the examples were all dry food, none provided a wet food example. I did find one vet site that suggested 1 oz. per pound that the dog weighs, so at 58 lbs., Chick's water amount would be 58 oz. = about 7 cups. However, I don't think my dogs drink near that amount of water in a day. Maybe someone else can set this straight.

Although I'm not being much help on the "how much" front, I wonder if a crate water bottle -- the kind that only dispense a little at a time, might be useful for Chick.

  4. It's very common. All of my 5 greys have had bald spots to various extents. Two of them grew some fur in once they came to my house, three did not. There are various oils and products that contribute to a healthy coat that might help fur regrowth. Salmon oil is what we use currently here. Welcome to you and your black boy! What's his name?

  5. No bloody injuries, tears, or rips here. Usually the only way I'd notice one was coming off/had come off was that Scout would lick it for a day or two. Just a tiny bloody stub left. I found one of the sloughed-off nails once -- it was intact and hollow.

What do Arwen's nails look like when they grow back? Scout's would look gnarled and funky. Before we got the SLO under control with tetracycline and supplements, the consistency on most of the nails was soft and chalky.
