  1. are all the seats down when you have him jump into the car? the back area is pretty small with the seats up. my male who goes into cars is hesitant in a small back area, it's like jumping into a black hole. try a lighter colored blanket, and maybe someone sitting up near the seats and a running start. also make sure the covering is non-skid- rubber backed bath mat maybe? remember it took annie 9 months to figure out how to get into my 2 door civic, then when we went to a 4 door she was totally confused but learned it much faster.
  2. but she's older now, and has less muscle. don't go by her racing weight. less stress on bones, joints etc. when they are thin.
  3. before agility make sure she has her basics down. also check out some the fantastic posts of videos by krissy of kili. krissy has really worked her pup and communicated beautifully with her. the early posts of basic knowledge are superb. and yes, greyhounds are puppies for a l-o-n-g time, fortunately once they mature the duration of their play time reduces and the sprinting mode kicks in along w/ the power.
  4. felix (who i adopted at 7 weeks) was just as bad during his adolescent months- many months most likely 1.5 years! also their brains go into off position. if this helps he ran straight into a stone garden table and ripped off a ton of hair(which never grew back) but didn't shatter his bone!!!!. i iced it since he was able to walk/limp to me while screaming the scream of death. he was crashed into fencing regularly, knocked us over- throwing us across the yard!(ouch) they build up speed but still don't have their turns nice and tight during their youth. the nicks on her rear legs might be from dew claws. when they compress while running the claws slash the rear legs. keep the nails as short as possible, be persistent. for the dings, and felix has lots of them- liquid vitamin e applied once they have scabbed, messy but the hair will most likely regrow. recently he ripped the hair off of his shoulder while scooting around a yard- he hit a wind chime! the vitamin e worked in 3 weeks. i was serious about bubble wrap at one point. the coats rip as well- i have a couple of those that i repaired and donated to fosters. it's a very good time to start obedience classes, they help her find her physical body. the exercises will make her aware of her presence and give her more control. btw there are light weight protective coats made for hunting dogs, but a greyhound's body will most likely NOT fit into them. also, your dog will die from the heat. just wait it out and help her figure out her space. we just left texas last week after a summer long teaching commitment. 103 and rising.....OMG!!! i spent the summer hosing my dogs down so i could take them for their nightly vampire walks- 90+at 10pm!!!
  5. if it's pollen no need to use any soap/shampoo. my welsh terrier had the worst allergies in the fall and his skin would deteriorate and had hot spots galore. i used to just hose him down, plain water and dry him off and this seemed to help 98%. yes, the ground mold will also be creeping up. has she reacted to pollen in the past?
  6. annie has calcification of the shoulder where the tendon from her spine bundles at the shoulder. we used an excellent orthopedic surgeon and consultation from the famed and kindhearted/wonderful dr. couto. this develops long term after a significant injury. the first stage of rehab and control was NO ACTIVITY for 6 weeks, tramadol/gabapentin/every 8 hrs, metacam daily-4 weeks. then after that t&g 2xs daily, metacam- 3weeks. after 8 -9 weeks we slowly started to increase activity and then reduced meds to only metacam. checked bloodwork, fine w/ metacam administering as needed. annie was screaming and i really thought it was osteo thus the digital X-rays and ortho man. i wanted the best quality X-rays. she has had one flare up, but her activity has decreased. she's good for long walks, but when it comes to hunting squirrels and birds w/ her partner in crime, she feels it. contact dr. couto, he's currently doing extensive research on corns. if it is what annie has- it read on the X-ray as a pointy substance on the bone- to a layman. but couto is your man. your vet can send the digital X-rays to him. best of luck. corns are a real PITA~
  7. annie learned how to get into a 2 door civic. i threw a high quality treat in, placed her frozen front legs in and pushed w/ my knee. after 9 months of this she now jumps into anything what so ever as long as it's the passenger side. that's the side i taught her on. i would try the back seat, keep the interior light on, it might be dark in there(as it was in our civic) and be persistent. set up the car and give it a running start- be it the rear or side door. if annie learned, your pup will.
  8. tags w/ all cell phone #s and i included my group's lost dog hotline # and their i.d.#. often one runs into an area w/o cell phone reception. just give your group a head's up, if necessary they will contact another local group or get the info and send it to you. so when you have reception you will know where they are. trust me, this will not happen if you prepare for the worst case scenario.
  9. i do rice and 1/3 boiled ground beef for a couple of days. don't go back to kibble too fast, get firm stools first. if that doesn't work then i always speak to my vet, their preference can vary either flagyl or tylan powder. the vet knows best. i do have both on hand, tylan powder when it's squeaky stomach. that is 1/4t daily for a couple of days- just throw it on the back of the tongue and feed fast. that's what i take when i'm traveling for a quick fix. but paris prof is right, it's an excellent antibiotic for cleaning up the gut. usually my dogs need the 2 week rx repeated when their gut is really loaded w/ bacteria.
  10. i was about to purchase the Soresto collars, but i needed something that minute, my dogs picked up texas hitchhikers while i was traveling and my son-in-law was watching them in san antonio. the more reasonable prices, target, walmart, amazon all took to long to be delivered. i bathed them, waiting for them to dry thoroughly- did remove quite a few fleas and then treated w/ frontline plus. yes, the posts say wait 48 hrs after a bath, but i spoke directly to Merial the manufacturer and they said as long as the dogs are dry. it took 4 days to kill all the fleas, but i went over them daily with an old fashioned flea comb and found the lethargic buggers and killed them manually. within 4 days the fleas and feces are gone. i personally like frontline plus since my dogs have not had any reactions and are tick free when used. i have applied it every 3 weeks when necessary but it can last as long as 6 weeks. so, if i'm tardy in the application it still works. the original dawn dish soap kills fleas without insecticides, i always wash all bedding and vacuums like mad, throw out the bag when i'm done. years ago i used to put a cheap flea collar in the vacuum bag.
  11. it's the egg yolk that has the fats. could be shedding but if her coat is a different texture it could be the food. home cooked recipes work for some dogs, not for others. can you also add sardines if you don't want to change your recipe? what's the reason for changing over to a home cooked diet?
  12. i just ask, they always cooperate. when i brought annie in for intense pain and lameness in her right front leg(thought it was cancer but it is calicification of the shoulder irritating the muscle that emanates at the back and attaches at the shoulder- the site w/ the 2 calcified points) the orthopedic specialist who i never saw before called a list of vendors to see who had the best price.he sent me home with 2 weeks worth of meds to hold me over. ALLIVET has you order the rx, you enter your vet in their data base and they contact your vet. for the rx. pain meds, i.e. tramadol and gabapentin are cheap at COSTCO. i used to order my scottie's florneiff thru a canadian pharmacy, less than 1/3 the cost of american vendors, that took a month per order so i ordered many months worth at a time. don't you order your heart worm meds on line?
  13. we just did 4k miles with our dogs, ny to NOLA-HOUSTON-SAN ANTONIO and back to NY via ARK,TN,VA,PA,NJ,NY. They get into a rhythm once you establish it. Our bladders do not hold as well as the dogs, so every other pit stop we walked the dogs, watered them and back into the CRV. We took turns running into the john and waited w/ the ac and car running. I always leash my dogs before the doors open. One person holds the leashes inside the car, the other grabs the leash and lets them out. You might want to practice STAY in the car w/ the doors open. Since you are driving by yourself, how about a belt or buckle collar slipped over the head rest and loop the leashes thru the belt then fasten. all the dogs will be tethered before you open the door. As to potty- walk the dogs back and forth or in a circle and say- go potty or do your business or go pee. for the lesser trained pup just be consistent, don't wander all over the world, she most likely will empty herself right before she returns home, remember high value treats when she goes!!!. at rest areas it's a line back and forth near the fence, usually the pet area is adjacent to a fence for some reason. i then will take the dogs for a longer walk if it's not too hot. they will do a better job adjusting to the cold than mine did adjusting to the heat in texas. felix nearly lost it one walk, he just couldn't adjust. i had to hose him down and we never walked during the day. as you know there are plenty of good coat makers out there and the dogs will grow coat. mine are out and playing and going for long walks in the single digits. if you are happy in your new home and they have their dog beds or couch they will be fine!! now it's time to start thinking about what YOU will need to stay warm this winter.....welcome to the East. where in PA?
  14. I agree with the 24_5percent protein level,14percent fat gurgling is somethng that often points to signs of tummy upset. Most likely she is also sneaking some grass. Let her tummy rest, white rice and boiled chop meat,a 3 to 1ratio. Then try a lower protien food. Do I smell an IAMS green bag conversation brewing?
  15. cut down on food? that works in my house. also if the farts are enough to clear a room it might be intolerance to the type/blend of food. probiotics instead of yogurt, fortiflora by purina is a good one.
  16. I wouldn't worry. It's the summer. Come tje winter your pup will jave.gained weight. Mine always drop both weight. And.muscle mass in the hot.weather.
  17. hot dogs, kosher salami, chicken livers- cooked in the microwave. nuke a very short time and cover loosely they explode. those are the soft treats i used when i was showing and needed to bait. when you bait you want something very high on the "goody list" that will keep their attention no matter what.
  18. I've never had a dog pee where they eat!this may sound strange but peeing in a specific spot can become a bad habit. It sounds like that's what you have. I have tried every cleaning agent when this happened.....aside from removing the rug my solution is an easy fix. Or,don't let him go to the basement.
  19. if i don't use a kiddie gate to contain the pups in the "dog room" which was my daughter's room and is also the guest room, they wander. annie needs to know that's it- she must sleep on the full size brass bed, felix has his elevated dog bed...
  20. check the caloric count of your food. all foods have it somewhere near the % listings. my male gains weight eating 4 cups per day, he's now 8.5 and i want to keep him on the thinner side, so he's down to 3.5/3.75 cups. he makes it up to 78-80#s on the 4 cup portion. aside from increase of a mere 1/4 c. per meal you can add in some white rice and boiled chop meat, that always puts the weight back on after a stomach bug in my house. cheap and easy, i swear by my rice cooker.

  22. i have spotted a brindle greyhound within the gated complex behind basse on tuxedo, just below nachodoces. could that be you? if so, we are a couple of blocks away.
  23. merrick has another food, less ingredients and it costs less....american something or another. my dogs did not do well on it but according to the feed store here in san antonio many dogs do really well on it and it's very reasonable. my welsh terrier's coat became dull and brittle on the trader joe's food. i see you are in san antonio. i frequent the store on austin highway across from target, the kibble i'm talking about is it in their next to last row on the right hand side of the store in the back on the right aisle just before the end. btw, where in SA are you? we are presently visiting alamo heights and concluding our summer teaching at the southwest school of the arts. pm me if you wish. or just post your contact info on gt and i'll get in touch w/ you. not too much walking only at 10pm w/ our dogs. they are HOTHOTHOT!
  24. Frisbee, soccer balls, tennis balls, and a tennis racket for you, seltzer bottles (unopened) and lots of patience. Start obedience classes once all your pups shots are done greyhounds do very well in obedience, especially the pups I just bought a megga sized chuckit!kick fetch ball, felix loves it. Wubbas and other toys were killed in no time. TJMAXX has greatly reduced name brand toys Enjoy ☆☆
