  1. That sounds about right to me, too. Whole thing took about a month but it required a lot of coordinating because the race track he came from was 3 hours away from our house, the closest person that could do a home visit lived >1 hour away from our house, so everything had to be done on the weekends, plus it was during the holiday season which seemed to slow things down a bit more...
  2. Welcome from Gainesville, Florida!! I can't wait to see pictures of Dawn and Ziggy! I'm also a new mom to a brindle boy!
  3. When we were going through the whole adoption process with Toby, I felt a little bit guilty because we had a 10 yr old whippet who had lived his entire life as an "only" dog. I was worried that our whippet would hate having to share the spotlight with another dog, especially in his senior yrs, that he'd be depressed over it, etc. I also was worried about he'd react when the home visit took place. The adoption group sent over a man with a 110 pound (no that is not a typo) greyhound. It looked more like a great dane than a greyhound! Our whippet ran up to him, smelled him all over while the GH smelled him, and then he laid back down in his bed in the family room while the visiting GH wandered all around our house! At that point I knew he would be fine. Having Toby in the house has really perked up our older dog. I was so worried about him being miserable, that it never occurred to me that he might actually enjoy having a buddy in the house! Hope everything goes well for you! Let us know!!
  4. Welcome! Greetings from Gainesville, Florida!! Kristin is gorgeous!!!

  8. Welcome, Chauncey! From Brindle boy Toby in Florida.
  9. I second the beet pulp! I'm a new GH mom too. We brought Toby home 3 months ago. He had mushy to liquidy poops. We tried pumpkin and it didn't do anything, although he enjoyed the taste. We also tried different foods til we hit on the right one. This is what worked for us: Science Diet Sensitive Stomach formula. In the morning, he gets that with a tbsp of beet pulp shreds mixed in with a little warm water. You can buy a 40 lb bag of beet pulp shreds at Tractor Supply for about $13! In the evening, he gets less of the dry food but I add in cooked white or brown rice with veggies mixed in--he likes green beans the best). Again I add a tbsp of beet pulp shreds and I mix in a tbsp of plain yogurt. His poops are great now. Hang in there and you will find the right combination that works for your dog. And congrats on your new addition!! Edit: we are native floridians too. In the summertime, we keep our house at 78 degrees. No colder than that. Right now it's "open window weather" in north FL so I would guess our temp in the house is about 75 or so...
  10. Rest in peace, beautiful Nole.
  11. I am sitting in my office crying. I hope no one walks in. I am so sorry for the loss of your beautiful girl. As the saying goes, dogs have only one fault--they don't live long enough. I'm hoping that the wonderful memories you have of your precious girl will bring you comfort.
  12. Condolences on the loss of your precious Bo. I remember when my beloved Italian Greyhound died, and I went to pick up her ashes... When they handed me the ashes, it was like having my heart ripped out all over again. May you find comfort in the memories of all the happy times you shared with him.
  13. Welcome Rex, you are SO very handsome. You look like a movie star! No wonder you have your human wrapped around your little paw!
  14. Welcome! What gorgeous babies you have! And I love how Motch got censored!!
  15. Both Spartacus and Canaan are gorgeous!!
  16. Those are great pics! He is so adorable!!
  17. Kiff is so very beautiful! Who could say no to that face?
  18. Greg is a real cutie pie, and your Lexie is gorgeous! I love her pink bow picture! Such a princess! Our GH was named Marcus when we got him but we had to change it, because that is my boss's name too, and there was NO WAY that was going to fly!
  19. That is so cool that you remember him! His name back then was Sol Marcus. I had to change his name because my boss's name is Marcus and there was no way my dog and boss were going to have the same name!! At GPA Tampa Bay I dealt with Maryann and Joe mostly, throughout the adoption process. Everyone was so nice! I wish there were a GPA chapter up in this area...Ocala and Gainesville would be big adoption markets to tap into. I could understand them being apprehensive about Gville with all the college students here that seem to think getting a dog is an impulse item, not realizing it's a lifetime commitment. But not everyone that lives here is a college student... How cute!! GH's all Noled out! That would not be safe where we live!
  20. I was wondering if anyone was going to catch that! Yes, I rec'd my bachelor's and master's degrees from FSU. But when I graduated, I got my first "real" job in Gainesville. That's where I met my husband (a UF grad--yes we have a mixed marriage) so I've lived in Gainesville since 1987. It's not a problem until the FSU-UF football game comes around, and we've been so pitiful these last 5-6 years that it's not even that bad anymore! GPA has a great group down there! I grew up in Tampa and so I guess that's why I decided to look at the GPA Tampa Bay webpage that fateful day in November when I saw Toby's pic. Very nice people in that organization--they do a wonderful job, not just with the adoption but with all the follow up, too.
  21. Hello everyone! I just found GreyTalk while surfing the internet. My husband and adopted our first retired racing greyhound, Toby. a couple of months ago. Toby came to us straight from the Derby Lane GPA Kennel in St. Petersburg, FL. We have an almost-11 year old whippet, and before the whippet we had an italian greyhound, who died of old age. So you can see we've always loved this style of dog. Last November, I don't know what possessed me, but I visited GPA Tampa Bay's webpage and saw the picture below. I was in love! Long story short, he came home to live with us in December. Toby and our whippet get along great, and we absolutely love him! He is a wonderful dog!!
