  1. We've had that happen here with Pinky. If you think it's possible he might have just ripped it I wouldn't worry too much (as any "normal" hound can do the same thing as well), but if you see it happen again or if you notice his nails becoming brittle or cracked, or if one of the nails splits/breaks and is hanging there, that's when I'd start looking at SLO... When Pinky has ripped/lost nails it's happened both ways: they've come clean off, in which case I wrap the foot for a day or two (because usually it bleeds and will reopen if messed with), or they've cracked, in which case I will see if I can trim or remove whatever is cracked or broken, sometimes I can, sometimes I can't...either way that gets bandaged for a day or two also (due to bleeding) and we revisit it then...if I couldn't trim it before, sometimes after a day or two I've been able to trim it, etc. Both of her dew claws pretty much came off clean, but it took a couple of days for them to "let go"...I could see at the base of the nail that it looked kind of yellowy/brown, and then it would start to pull away from the quick...ick. One of them BLED AND BLED AND BLED...it was crazy. Pinky takes tetracycline 500mg twice a day, niacinamide twice a day, vitamin e twice a day, and an omega 3 caplet in the morning. I just switched her to Blue Buffalo Fish and sweet potato food and she seems to love it, I am sure it will help her skin too. As long as I am a good mom about getting her medicine into her at the right times and I keep her out of the sun, she does quite well. If she has a flare and starts losing nails again, we have to do a burst and taper course of prednisone which takes almost a month to complete from start to finish...but it sure clears her up! Hopefully Soul's toenail loss was simply due to "normal" factors rather than to his lupus....
  2. My little one just had 4 teeth pulled and the doc gave us some Rimadyl because one of the extractions required a gingival flap surgery and there are stitches, so there might have been more pain there. When our broken legs have to go to the orthopedic specialist, they come back to us with Fentanyl patches (they've often had plates put in and had bone grafts). That and as Jenn said, cancer patients, is about the only use I can think of for a patch. They've been known to make some dogs have a morphine type reaction, if she's acting oddly I'd take it off. Immediately put it in a ziploc bag and return it to the vet. Some places it's not cool to dispose of them in the regular trash, and you don't want any of your other pups getting their mitts on it either.
  3. who's Towlie? Towlie is a towel from South Park (the show) that is always high...
  4. Immediately I thought, "aww, she really IS a bionic FrankenMoose!" Beautiful incision. I am the kind of person that honestly and truthfully admires stuff like that (I'm kind of a dork in that way). My not terribly expert advice would be to leave the stitches in for several days longer than they say to...with Pinky's leg I left them in longer than I was instructed and I think it made a HUGE difference when it came to the size of the scarring (actually you can't even tell that Pinky ripped the backside of her leg open at all!). Since it's in such an area for Mazie that it's going to probably be prone to stretching, I'd want to leave the stitches in longer.
  5. Alright, I'm sure she's home by now, I hope everything is going well and she gets a good night's rest. I'm headed to bed but I'll try to check in before I go to work
  6. We're home, he's fine. Little monkey sang for the girls at the vet all day They adored him there. When I walked in I could hear him singing in the back
  7. I'm very glad to hear she's doing so well! Hopefully she will cooperate at home!
  8. Wonderful news! We're sending our best thoughts for a quick and full recovery for Miss Mazie Moose
  9. My little Latte (AKA Skimmie, AKA the Bean) is going for a dental tomorrow. This will be his first time under anesthesia since he's been with me, so I am not sure how he will react. I'm sure he'll be just fine, but he'll need a couple extractions, his little front teeth are rotten (he's only 4!). I drop him off at 8 and pick him up when I get off work at 4:30.
  10. Oh Winslow, your pic in your business attire is JUST what I needed to brighten my day, thank you!
  11. Any chance of a spinal issue? Maybe see a chiropractor or acupuncturist? There was a dog up at the Dubuque track that had a small stroke (they guessed anyway) and for a few months one side of his body didn't work right and he would knuckle his front foot under. He saw the chiropractor and took robaxin (muscle relaxer) and got massaged. He had a full recovery. He didn't return to racing but was adopted out as a pet I'm not terribly good with kidney problems and digestive issues, but I would think if something was wrong with the spine/spinal cord that could effect many different systems of a dog's body, because the brain's messages to those areas aren't making it there correctly.
  12. It looks like a big nothing! I would bet they can take care of it when he has his dental I'll be interested to hear what the vet says, but what montgomery2524 just said sounds about right to me...
  13. Judy I just read your blog so I could catch up. We had a girl come through the kennel a couple of years ago, a broodie, who had the green snot and boogers you mentioned. She had a severe sinus infection and our vet put her on zithromax (I took zithromax when I had pneumonia so that's some hardcore stuff) but that did the trick. Antibiotics that we tried before that didn't do anything for her. Sounds like Emmy's been feeling cruddy and that's why she was choosing to just rest and take it easy. I hope she's feeling better soon. IMO you are doing right by her by helping her learn how to get around being blind. It sounds like she's making good progress and will continue to do so, especially once the snotty booger problem is resolved. I think she will adapt in time, but it's going to take a while. I bet your house sounds very *festive* now with all of your sleigh bells jingling! Emmy, Judy, & Mike
  14. Oh Karen she's beautiful! Arco did a good job Welcome home sweet baby girl!
  15. Our vet also does animal chiro. I have had my kids adjusted and usually try to do it every 3 to 6 months. Sometimes we are there more often if they've fallen somehow or had a collision out in the yard. Fritz has an ornery neck problem that occasionally gives him trouble also. We had a little girl come into the kennel who had a cervical spine injury when she was little. Her right rear leg worked overtime whenever she tried to walk, so much so that she'd end up springing her back end up in the air when she was trying to move about. She was treated with chiro and muscle relaxants. I took her every few weeks to be adjusted and it made all the difference in the world. Her leg still works overtime but it's really toned down, so she can pretty much walk normally now, without springing her hind end around. Her mother also saw the chiro with her for her hip and it relieved a limp that she'd had since she came to us from the farm. I hope that Cricket sees some benefits, chiro seems to really help the older hounds
  16. This is kind of random, but I never noticed before...does it get confusing having a Jet and a Jeff in the same house? I bet when you yell for one of them the other thinks you're calling Love the car pics of the dogs...Jet has some cute earsies in a few of the pics

    Kiowa

Sheila, I'm so sorry to hear about Kiowa. I will always remember his pictures with "his" kitty. I hope someday my dogs and kitties will love each other as much as Kiowa loved Mandy
  18. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis for sweet Emmy, but, not cancer and perfectly healthy! She will adapt very quickly, I'm sure. Plus she's got lots of friends to help her get around the house I'm sure she'll be back to ballin' in no time
  19. I went to dinner with my friend last night and she told me her dog was diagnosed with heartworms She said the test showed a barely positive result, but, nonetheless, it was there. He will start treatment soon...he has to be kept quiet for several weeks (I remember JillysFullHouse's Heart going through that). They got him about a year and a half ago from the shelter as a puppy. They hadn't had him to the vet yet this spring for his yearly because their lives were very hectic and they just didn't have time. Unfortunately, that window of a few months was likely the time when he became infected I don't think the treatment is as long or as intense as some other cases, becuase it was caught somewhat early. Does anybody have any experience with that? I mean, does that sound right to you? Please send some good thoughts for Kacer and his family as they go through this...Kacer has a little girl, my friend's daughter that has stayed with me before...she's worried about her dog and is sad they won't get to play together for a while Here's a picture of him...he's some kind of a hound mix...he's red with black on the tips of his hair...
  20. Sending good thoughts for Emmy and hoping that it's something that can be handled fairly easily...
  21. As soon as I saw that pic of pup #2 I said out loud, "awww, she's got a mohawk!" and all of my pups looked at me like I was nuts I love the mohawk babies We had one at the kennel, a boy, Big Dog Barkin...his gramma is Lucky Loretta, and boy does she produce pups with mohawks! My friend has his momma and I'm pretty sure she's got a 'hawk too, but his is a DOUBLE mohawk that's at least an inch wide! Continued good thoughts for all the babies and for momma, but especially good thoughts are coming from us to pup #2
  22. I'm just now seeing this thread but I'll be checking it regularly to hear about your travels, how exciting! Looks like Jet and Ryan are doing alright
  23. The M-drug is likely Metronidazole, also known as Flagyl. That, coupled with the Immodium should help him. Sometimes it takes a day or two though. I hope he's feeling better soon...someone mentioned the Metamucil wafers...might be worth a try?
  24. When they xrayed Ace for possible kidney stones, a portion of her stomach showed up in the xray and they saw a suspicious donut shaped item in her tummy We went back for more specifically targeted films and they gave her barium too just in case, and it turned out to be nothing, it was likely a pocket of food with an air bubble in the middle of it Boy did they have me scared though...possible diagnoses were pocket of food, foreign object, or cancer. Thank goodness it was something that left! Here's hoping Bell has the same outcome!
