  1. Robin had a tick get on him in that area one time, and the mark looked like that for a day or so afterwards, though it was bigger. We had it checked out--wasn't lyme. I think the skin in that area is very sensitive to bites.
  2. Thanks for the advice, everyone. Thankfully, though there is still a discernible limp, Robin is much better today. He has enough energy that he was even going crazy earlier for a treat. A big improvement over the dog who, on Sunday, was acting twice his age as he gimped around the yard. I hope he keeps it up! Maybe this limp is just a sprain. It would last for a while if he keeps aggravating it, right? Nothing to worry about tomorrow at the vets, I'm sure. Think happy thoughts, though, please! I can't help but worry.
  3. Hi, Robin has a vet appt on Wednesday for his annual checkup. He is 8 1/2. The few of you who know him from the occasional Greyhound Adventures walk knows that he is an exuberant, outgoing, and fairly energetic boy. Just in the past year, we've had many instances of him overdoing it a bit with his zoomies and becoming quite stiff and sore for a couple of days afterwards. It always goes away--it seems to be a bit like when I go jogging when it's been a while and I pay for it later. Based on advice from GT, we've given him the occasional aspirin, but it never really seems to make a difference. Since we're seeing the vet anyway, I wanted to ask them if we could get a prescription of something to keep on hand for when this happens. I don't know if they'll do that for us, but I want to ask. My question for you all is, what should I ask for? I am familiar with many of the names of meds from here, but what do people usually use for soreness like this? Thanks! PS--Okay. I have to ask. I am trying very hard NOT to be worried. Honest. But we took Robin to Martha's Vineyard this weekend and overdid it on the walking around, and he's still sore and limping after almost two days of rest. (Though I think it's a bit better.) It's his right front leg, and it's been sore off and on for the past month. I think it's probably a corn I can't find, since it seems to get worse on pavement and better on grass. And it looks like he's gingerly stepping on his foot, rather than it coming from higher up on the leg. I'm sure it's a corn--maybe one on the side or something? I don't really know what I'm looking for. But could people think good thoughts for him, just in case? Requisite picture:
  4. I was home in CT visiting my mom earlier this week and saw her dogwalker, who also has a greyhound. He was recently being treated for what they thought was a herniated disc, or something like that, and was given prednisone. Apparently, he had a reaction to the pred and was in the hospital. As a result, he has developed diabetes, which is now being treated, and now is having some hind end difficulties with knuckling under and such. She says that her vet has given pred to many greyhounds and has never seen this kind of a reaction. Given that this community is much larger than that vet's clientele.....has anyone here ever heard of this happening? It seems like a freak thing...he's 11 years old, I think, and I'm glad he seems to be doing okay now. She's on a schedule for checking his glucose and giving his shots.
  5. Robin has had something for a couple of years that looks a little like the second picture, but without the redness. We've been watching it, and I don't think it has grown. But he has a vet appt on Wednesday for a checkup. He measured it last year. What do they do to remove something like that? Sedation and everything, or is it less major than that?
  6. I don't know details about possibilities, but I do know that I don't let Robin do his zoomies until it's the cool evening, because he has a hard time cooling down afterwards. A spray bottle of water helps, too, if he seems to be panting a lot (like he is right now--we just got back in from outside, and it's cool in the house, but he's still "feelin' it" from outside).
  7. Robin loves his salad, especially the new baby grass. He will go out of his way to eat the one special piece of grass that he sees across a patch of dirt in the yard....

    Wilbur ....

I'm so sorry. You went through so much...
  9. f_yellow f_yellow for Bacchus. :f_pink :f_pink for Nike.
  10. We also used them when we lived in Falls Church. They were recommended by Virginia Greyhound Adoption, who we adopted with. I don't remember which doctor we saw, but we always liked them. And it's right off 66.
  11. I'm sorry. He was so pretty, and I always loved his ears in your siggy.
  12. Do you have pajamas with legs? I know clothing works well to cover up access to things like that. I know some people have even gotten creative with pants and boxers.... I guess I'm probably not too much help....
  13. Robin never talked, except for the occasional whine, for over 5 and a half years. A few months ago (no more than 6), he suddenly became a talker! Now he talks all the time to try to let us know his needs and wants. Mostly wants.... It really is a new thing for him. Strange, since he just turned 8. I swear, this boy just keeps on evolving and changing on us!
  14. Robin is 30 inches at the shoulder, and 31 inches long from neck base to tail. He is usually one of the biggest when we go to greyhound events (of course, reading this thread, he doesn't seem too big). He raced at 74 pounds, and now he's 84 pounds, which seems to be pretty good for him. So maybe he's pretty tall compared to his weight? I'm not sure....but he's always bigger than the other greys!
  15. Oh my goodness..... :f_white :cry1
  16. We think Robin pulled a muscle about 6 days ago, after a couple of bouts of insane zoomies, and he's been limping off and on ever since. Mostly when he gets up from lying down for a while, because his leg is stiff. There's a muscle on the inside of his thigh that I can feel--it feels hard and tight, and could be the culprit, since it's not the same as the other leg. (I know other things come to mind when a hound limps, but this really feels long and striated like an extremely tight muscle. Has anyone ever felt this kind of thing?) I think he has strained things before, but never quite this badly. My question, especially for those of you who have had more active racers is, does this sound like pulled muscles you've seen? And about how long do you see evidence of soreness after a severe muscle pull? Is a week excessive? Is there a point where I should worry? The limp is pretty mild now, but it's there. It doesn't seem to bother him, though, as he tried to do zoomies again today. I'm probably over-worrying. After all, now that he's 8, we have been noticing more muscle soreness after running, so it's probably just par for the course. Thanks!
