Separation Anxiety

We adopted a lurcher a month ago. He’s doing great but has become a Velcro dog to me. If I leave the house, he whines constantly even with my husband and adult son home.

Adopting a second hound is not an option- any advice?

There are lots of advice if you look up separation anxiety from past post.  I would start slow while you are in the house.  If you have a crate or baby gate that you can contain him in (give him a chew toy, dental chew something to distract him). then go in and out of his view of sight. If you have other family members home put a leash on him and have him stay with them.  Then go do something like laundry disappear from him while you collect and load the machine, them pop back into his sight do not make a fuss only great him when he is calm and after you have been in the room for a little bit.  Then disappear when you switch washer to dryer then again when you put clothes away.  He will learn that you are coming back.  Just make it a normal part of your day and he will get it.  
 

He has picked you as his rock and just needs to know where you are and that you are coming back if he loses sight of you. Just like when your son was little and got left for the first few times when you got to go to the store back to work.  He will soon pickup that you have not been rehomed without him.  And will learn you patterns and become board with them soon enough and the Velcro will loosen, another good place to practice is to shut the door to the bathroom, bedroom when you go in and out the door.

Also let your husband and older children put his food bowl down. That will help him begin a connection to another human.
