Scooby172
Jack has his first dental tomorrow. He does have a top canine tooth that is dis colored and vet thinks dead. There are no problems with pain or abcess, it has been like this for awhile. Do you think it is a good idea to pull the tooth since he is having the dental done anyway or watch and wait more? Thanks for any input! Jack is three years old no major health problems.

Guest jettcricket
My Duffy has 2 dead top teeth (fangs).....vet does not suggest pulling them unless it starts causing a problem. He explained that to pull those 2 teeth it's very involved especially with dogs with thinner snouts. The root goes up into the sinus cavity. So far it hasn't caused a problem for him. tbhounds
They need to radiograph that tooth. Ideally it should be extracted but, potentially it will be a pita to extract-guess it will depend on how the rad looks.
Scooby172
Well, since it is dental month, the vet is giving a fifty dollar discount on all dental packages. Radiographs are included in the estimate, we will see what the vet thinks tomorrow. I am still on the fence at this point.
Walliered
My vet pulled one of DaVid's canine. It was a lot of work. He broke the upper one right after that. She said to "just watch it" and that was probably about 2 years ago. No problems.
Scooby172
Talked to vet when I dropped Jack off this am. She is going to do x Rays and a thorough check on the tooth. Unless there is a problem or abcess she thinks she will leave it, he is a young dog, she would rather watch it. Will update when I hear more. Guest Greyt_dog_lover
With our group and my past experience with canine teeth in general, it is best to have a specialist deal with those teeth. Not to degrade vets, but when it comes to the canine teeth, as others have stated they are more involved when removing. My little girl that I adopted in Oct of last year had her lower left canine broken in half when I adopted her. The group paid for her to go to an oral surgeon since the lower canine is attached to the lower mandible. I know the upper canines are as complicated. Scooby172
Jack is home and resting. Vet did not pull tooth, no abscess and everything looked good on exam and x-ray. Will just keep a close eye on the tooth for any problems.
