RaineysMom
hi all, Zeke ripped up his nail on Sunday. I ended up taking him to the vet yesterday afternoon to have them take a look at it (something was sticking out just below the nail??? They thought it was part of the nail). The snipped off the nail, then cauterized it. They wrapped it up very well and said there was some cotton to protect it. Well, he's been favoring it today and clearly in pain (he's on Rimadyl and an antibiotic) -- I called and spoke to the vet about adding Tramadol (which I knew was fine with Rimadyl, but I wanted his ok). The vet suggested taking the bandage off today, rather than tomorrow as he first had instructed. I did, but the cotton batting is fused to both the underside of his paw and to the toe/nail that they removed. It LOOKS like there is some yellow stuff that is causing the issue, but not sure (I'm sure some dried blood is part of the problem. I called again and the vet said to rinse it with water (not to soak) -- I had already tried getting it wet and it didn't come off. So, they said to just let it fall off on its own. He hasn't stood up since I took the bandage off but I'm pretty sure it will continue to cause him issues until the cotton is removed. does anyone know what I could use/do to get it off? I have no idea what the yellow substance is that is the "glue" ETA: that sucker was on there GOOD but Zeke got up about 1/2 an hour ago and within 3 steps (well, hops and steps) it was about 2/3 off of the pad and just stuck where the nail used to be. I was able to gently pull it off the rest of the way. Unfortunately, it's bleeding again but I have a sock on it. Hope he's good with it in his kennel tomorrow (I called in sick, 3rd time in 2 weeks for my dogs, hope I don't lose my job ). He's still limping/favoring it, so it must REALLY be painful. Oddly enough, 25 years ago I also had my big and two baby toe nails removed and cauterized, so I can feel his pain. ramonaghan
Poor Zeke! I'd probably try coconut or olive oil if he'll tolerate that amount of handling.
