Guest FreddyGirl
It looks like my Ryder, 11 year old, has renal failure. Vet mentioned he might 2 weeks ago at our appt. when I brought him in for the excessive urination. He has classic symptoms of excessive drinking and urination. Thank God for belly bands. 2nd vet appt. this Tuesday. Ryder eats kibble and raw right now. Please tell me what foods have worked for your renal, failure pups! I know I will most likely have to change what I am feeding him, low phosphorous, high protein, maybe prescription diet... Whatever he needs, he WILL get. MaryJane
I would suggest going with a home-made low protein diet (low phosphorous). Larry has kidney issues for years (creat high with low specific gravity) and I feed no more than about 1/2 cup of meat a day. He also gets white rice, veggies, potatoes, oatmeal and vitamin supplements. Good Luck
Guest 3furkids
My vet said egg whites.
tbhounds
If home cooking isn't possible the prescription foods while given a bad rap here work very well and have extended thousands of pets lives. Two that come to mind are Hills K/D and Purina's N/F. You could supplement those foods with egg whites, pasta, cottage cheese, cereal...... Just noticed that you said low phosphorous and high protein -- not quite right. The protein should be less but of a high quality so very usable. So both protein and phosphorus should be less. Raw would not be suitable (too much protein) although as mentioned above, the commercial kidney diets work ok.
EllenEveBaz
Hugs to you and Ryder. I got lots of diet ideas from this site: http://www.dogaware.com/health/kidneydiet.html#tripe (scroll up and down -- I just happened to look at the tripe section when I copied the link). JJNg
What are his actual bloodwork values? Has he been checked for a bladder infection? I'm surprised it's taken 2 weeks to make a diagnosis of kidney disease... Guest TopazDS
My Dancer (9) was diagnosed with proteinuria in May which was to be treated like renal failure, except for the short life span. The vet recommended a low phosphorous and protein food. She especially wanted us to switch to a dog food made for renal failure, but for how much she ate, it would have costed a fortune. We also added in rice, potatoes, and vegetables if she would eat them; however, she quickly started losing weight. She went from an overweight 62 to 52. Then she started losing muscle. For the last month we just wanted to keep her with us a little longer, so we were giving her anything she would eat. I hope your hound does well.
