GreyhoundGirl
I just pulled a tick out of Molly's ear. It's my first tick. What do I do from here? They get Frontline (Ivermectin) and Heartguard regularly. What else do I need to do? TIA!!
Guest widowcali
I'm not sure where you live, but flea and tick season is going to be bad in several parts of the country. A lot of folks swear by Diametreous (sp?) soil. You buy it at Home Depot or Lowes and spread it around the doggy potty yard. It works by killing organisms, like fleas and ticks, by dehydrating them to death. Some folks have added brewers yeast and garlic powder to their dogs food. I do that when one of the flea remedies (frontline or Advantix) stops working. Like many other bugs, fleas and ticks can become immune to a chemical killer if it is used long enough. So I switch off between the two and do the brewers yeast and garlic powder in between. It seems to work for me. Very rarely do I find ticks on them. Not sure about the fleas though, they don't really itch that much so it is hard to tell.
Guest FreeholdHound
I found a tick on Harry's ear the 2nd month I had him. He was on Frontline Plus and it worked the way it should... By the time I found my tick key & got him outside the tick just fell off dead. Whoo. Frontline doesn't repel, I didn't know that because I had never used it before. Charlies_Dad
What kind of tick? A 'deer tick' is very different to a 'dog/brown tick'. We have found ticks on all out dogs previously and only one (non-grey) came down with Lyme. We didn't even know it as often the deer ticks are tiny and almost impossible to find. Overall I would not be that concerned. Batmom
I'd -1- make sure you're using the full Frontline packet each month (it seems to have become popular amongst some folks to use only half, who knows why) and -2- keep up your daily tick checks. The little boogers don't all die instantly, alas. rascalsmom
For reassurance, you could get her tested for Lyme disease in 4-6 weeks. We did that with Ruby once after I found an engorged tick on her. tbhounds
I wouldn't sweat it. Just maintain a flea/tick protocol. We are using Activyl Plus at our clinic-having greyt success with this product. Winning the war against ticks :-) http://www.merck-animal-health-usa.com/products/96-59739-2/overview.aspx
