Dawnnziggy
Dawson had his distemper vaccine today. He started panting ,limping and pacing. We went to visit my mom and he would not lay down. We only stayed about 45 minutes. When we got home, I took his temp and it was 100.1. Next, I gave him a rimadyl because I could tell he was in pain. He was crying when he tried to lay down. I feel guilty because when I got him to the vet, it wasn't our normal vet is was someone else. In my heart, I knew I should leave but I didn't. I don't know what to do or if I even need to do anything else. He is resting now. Advice? Please?
KF_in_Georgia
Don't panic. His temperature is fine (normal in a dog is between 100 and 102.5). He might have an ache or be fidgety, but so far his symptoms aren't alarming. How long ago was the shot? And how old is Dawson? Dawnnziggy
Dawson is 7 years old and a big baby! Its all my fault, I know it. He had his shot around 4. He didn't start acting funny until about 6:30. He is resting comfortably now and his breathing is more normal too. I just love him so much I don't want him to be miserable. My DS looked on the internet and found out that swelling around the injection site is common.
Batmom
If he still has local swelling and ouchiness in the a.m., can you run by the vet for an antihistamine/anti-inflamm injection? And have them put a note in his chart to premedicate for future shots. We did that for Zema. Dawnnziggy
He seems fine this morning. He is laying on the side where he got the injection. Our normal vet puts the shot in between his shoulder blades. He just had so much pain! I am sure glad I had the Rimadyl. If I hadn't had that though, what else over the counter could I have given him?
Batmom
Benadryl might help in some cases, but you're really best off consulting your vet, who needs to know about the reaction anyways. Glad your pupper is better this a.m.!
