First Vet Visit With A (Presumably Healthy) Senior

Recommended Posts

So we may be adopting a 9 year old next weekend (please cross fingers and paws). With Patrick we were managing several conditions with multiple medications by that age so I'm not sure what goes in a normal senior panel.

So what should I ask for in terms of having a baseline and figuring out if she's healthy. Are folks thyroid testing as a matter of course these days, or only if there's a suspected issue? I don't know what medical care she's had, other than a recent dental and that she's potentially heartworm positive--her mom forgot the last two months.

Snap4DX, CBC (complete blood count), full chemistry panel, urinalysis, fecal.

Wouldn't bother with thyroid until you get the results of the previous back and resolve any issues. Then, if thyroid were low on the chemistry panel and the dog had symptoms of hypothyroidism, you might want to go further.

Basic blood tests on Liver and Kidney function. Tests for the most common endemic diseases (snap). Let the vet watch the dog walking, move all the limbs around and test reflexes. Test hearing. Test sight. Only if there are issues after all that do you need to spend more money.

Some old dogs have no problems whatsoever until their last 3 months... the perfect life.
