Guest droder1
Hi All, Took my seven year old Grey in for his rabies update (got him 3 years ago this month), and had the vet run a blood check. Results came back as "high" for creatinine and BUN. Through my research, I found these levels are typically higher in greyhounds, but it would appear my guy's are high even for a Grey... Vet has suggested a kidney supplement for a month, and recheck. No urinalaysis yet. The vet gets some greys but I don't think grey's are in his wheelhouse, so I'd like some more input. Levels: Creatinine: 3.4 mg/dl BUN: 38 mg/dl (11.17 BUN to creatinine) I know OSU is a great resource, as are a few others (burpdog), and I've spent hours looking through greytalk and other websites. I know some dogs just run high, simple as that. I can't find anything good on the creatine to BUN levels, what is appropriate there. His teeth aren't perfect, i know that can also increase these levels. No issues whatsoever on incontinence, he rarely needs to get up at night to get out, unless he goes overboard on water late at night (we don't withhold water). Perfect appetite, etc, he eats ToTW High Prairie. Weight: 76 lbs, raced at 72. Appreicate any feedback/thoughts. (Edit: Also worth noting, his blood was taken at 10am, he ate breakfast at 7am; if food intake matters). tbhounds
I would check the specfic gravity of your hounds first a.m. urine.
Batmom
What's your lab's normal for BUN and creatinine? Assuming the high end of the lab's range is BUN 27, creatinine 1.8 (or thereabouts), the values you posted are higher than "greyhound high" IMHO. It would be worthwhile to check the first a.m. urine -- specific gravity as tbhounds says, and protein as well. Is all else well within greyhound-normal ranges on the CBC and chemistry panel? (CBC -- greyhounds should have higher red cell values and lower white counts.) Guest droder1
Agreed they appear higher than greyhound high, but I do know the ratio is important and thats the piece I can't find concrete info, as well as his teeth and time of eating. Lab was antech diagnostics (Arizona); range for BUN 6-31; range for creatinine .5-1.6 (this one seems esp high). everything else looks good, WBC 5.4; RBC 7.8, HGB 19.7. His total protein is a bit high per Dr Stack's ranges, 6.9. Globulin is ok 3.2; all of these are within the labs ranges. Do agree urinalysis should be done. MaryJane
The values are high even for greyhounds. Get a urinalysis (first morning specimen) - should be checked for specific gravity and whether protein is overflowing into the urine. They should also check for bacteria/blood cells as this can impact protein levels in the urine. With these values, I would suggest starting on a lowered protein dog food (maybe k/d diet or home made) sooner rather than later especially if there is protein in the urine. Burpdog
did he draw the blood before or after the rabies shot? What was his BUN and creatine the last time you had blood work done? When was his last urinalsys? (or however you spell it) How are his teeth? When was his last Valley Fever test? Guest droder1
did he draw the blood before or after the rabies shot? What was his BUN and creatine the last time you had blood work done? When was his last urinalsys? (or however you spell it) How are his teeth? When was his last Valley Fever test? I am pretty sure the blood was taken before the rabies shot. I called the vet who did his work after he came off the track (through the adoption group), they didn't take blood for a blood test, just a heartworm test. So unfortunately, I have no baseline other than this... No urinalysis or blood drawn in the time I have had him. His teeth have plaque, he needs a dental this calendar year to stay ahead of the curve. No valley fever test to my knowledge.
Burpdog
Get a TBD panel with VF test to Protatek. The BUN & creatine should come down after a dental, but I don't think enough to be "normal" I would do a urinalysis also.
