Guest KPS915
Lila has a penchant for leaping at the back hatch of my SUV regardless of whether it's open or not. She's done it a few times now. My guess is she thinks its time for a car ride. A) I'm afraid she's going to hurt herself. B ) It scares the crap out of me. We ususally take her through the front door for potty breaks. This am I took her through the garage and my car was parked in its usual spot. On the way back into the house, she was half a step behind me and jumped up onto the back hatch. She was in the air with her front paws on the back windshield when I caught her. She jumped back down and was fine. Any advice as to how to curb this behavior. When we take her out in the car, we make her stand and wait (we're still working on sit) before she's allowed to hop in. Feisty49
Yah, I'd be concerned about her being hurt too. I take it she's not on a leash cause you're fenced in. How about if, as you walk toward the vehicle, you take hold of her collar and keep her close to you?
TheFullHouse
I leash mine up and give them just enough of the leash to walk by my side. I had one of mine jump up and hit the back of my SUV once and since then I've kept them on a short leash when getting into the truck. Batmom
Spend some time out there with a pocket full of great treats and teach her to "Wait" before she jumps in. ETA: It sounds like you've already started working on that. Keep it up and she'll get it! BellaBean
I had a foster do this once. She slammed herself into the back of my jeep before i had a chance to open the hatch. Scared the crap outta me! I thought for sure she was hurt, ever since then I keep my dogs on a very short leash until I have the hatch open and ready. They all just get so excited for car rides! Time4ANap
Teach her WAIT and UP. She may already know both if she was kept in a top crate at the track. She may just need to associate the words with getting in the vehicle. Quote Camp Broodie. The current home of Mark Kay Mark Jack and Gracie Kiowa Safe Joan. That's the answer. Short short leash until she's learned not to jump without permission. I automatically put Annie on a short leash if I think she's gonna do something of which I disapprove, such as when we approach people or other dogs. She doesn't jump on people, or dogs, but she gets soooo happy that she wants to run to them for attention. A dog her size can be pretty intimidating, even though I know she won't jump, so my hand is right at her collar.
