phall
Star just had his 6 month check up with his internal medicine specialist for his colitis (which is nicely under control right now). While there, the vet said his heart rate was very high - higher than it's been in all of his past visits to the hospital when he was stressed. I'm assuming it was still just the stress of the visit and the ultrasound he had undergone, as is my vet, so we're just monitoring it over the next few days. What's the normal heart rate for a young greyhound (Star is 3)? My vet said his heart rate should not be above 100 beats per minute. Thanks. KF_in_Georgia
I can't help with "normal" numbers, but try to be aware what might be going on in the background when your vet is taking Star's pulse. You might need to move so that you block Star's view of anything else going on and get him to concentrate on you. My Sam delivered an unbelievably high heart rate on one exam. What the vet didn't realize was that someone on the other side of the closed door was sweeping the floor, and Sam was watching over the vet's shoulder as that shadow moved under the door. Sam was just sure that whatever was moving over there was prey he needed to be ready to jump on. And sometimes, the sound of a squealing little critter in another room will get Sam revved up. So these days, I get in front of Sam, cuddle his head against me, and rub his ears while the vet takes Sam's pulse. And sometimes I just put my hand under Sam's jaw, tilt his head back some, and gently hold his mouth closed so the vet can actually hear Sam's heart; Sam's open-mouthed breathing makes it hard for the vet to hear. Guest Energy11
From a website by Dr Susan Stack: The greyhound's heart rate is slower than other dogs - again, due to athleticism. - 60-90 is normal at rest, it may be faster if excited (like at the vet's office). Hope this helps!
tbhounds
60-90 sounds right-- my guys go as low as 40 while sleeping. Nerves will definetly increase the HR- I suggest you take it yourself at home.where your hound is comfortable.
phall
Thanks for the info. When at the vet, Star's heart rate was 130-140. At home yesterday I listened to it three times while he was at rest - meaning laying flat out almost asleep - (and had not been out playing, running, etc. for a long time) and his rate was 120. This morning I just took it and it was 80-84 - much better and I'm a bit relieved. I'll continue to monitor it over the weekend. Pat
