Wanted, Recipies To Make At Home For Our Pups

Recommended Posts

I have been researching how to make homemade treats, and things for my pups when they are recovering from illness. I know that there are experts out there that have cracked the nutritional aspects, and would like to ask them to share. I have seen recipies for pedialite, low salt treats, chicken and rice etc. But there does not seem to be anywhere that they are all together. And some that I have seen in the past, seems to have disappeared. Can everyone share there special recipies that they have come up with to help our houndies????

Meals, recipies for things to make and to hydrate them. Anything to peak their appetite when they are not feeling well. Treats are a small part of this.

Thanks for asking for clarification.

I feed both my current dogs a home-made diet. I started feeding home-made years ago with my first greyhound (angel Onyx) who had cancer and continued with my second (angel Jake) who had severe chicken/noodle sensitivity.

My current dogs, Larry has developed a severe chicken allergy and has a sensitivity to noodles and has some kidney issues which is kept in check by a lowered protein/phosphorous diet, Lucy can tolerate some chicken but Larry's sensitivity has gotten so bad that he can't even lick her bowl without having a problem. Lucy though has had seizures so I'm making sure that she has preservative free food along with more frequent treats during the day to keep her blood sugar even.

Usually for breakfast they will have oatmeal with meat chunks (or hamburger). I add either grits, rice, or potatoes (sweet or regular). They each get between 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal/grits/rice/potatoes with about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of hamburger. I also add just a touch of molasses and some milk. You could switch out the rice and add elbow macaroni which I did for one of the previous dogs. Lately they have been getting a tablespoon of applesauce on the food in the AM. I find that the oatmeal is great for "keeping them regular and firming up the stool" and it also gives them a very lush coat and helps keep itching to a minimum.

For a mid-morning snack they get toast or bread with butter - I cut up into small pieces.

For a lunch snack they get a teaspoon or so of peanut butter

For dinner they get about 2 to 2 1/5 cups rice, about 1/2 cup vegetables (beans, peas, carrots), and about 1/2 cup meat chunks/hamburger. Lately I have been adding Forti-flora probiotics because Larry has had two cases of diarrhea.

Late evening snack I give them yogurt with a dog cookie.

They get calcium supplements (oyster shell) between 3 to 4 each day, along with 1 multivitamin and 1 fish oil (down from 2 fish oil). The female also gets cranberry pill because she had had urinary infections.

One of previous dogs just loved cheerios in yogurt - it was the only thing I could get him to eat when he was going through chemo. Another thing all my dogs have loved is Challah bread with just a bit of butter on it.

I have used Dr Remaillard at Angel Memorial in Boston who is a nutritional vet to formulate various diets for my greyhounds. She is the one that recommended the types of supplements and how much along with the quantities of food (and types) to feed which I adjusted to get the "ideal look".

Let me check which recipes I have for dog treats that would be good for a novice. I usually do vegetarian treats.

To feed home-made is usually more expensive than commercial dog food and with the recent increases in food prices it can cost about 150 per month for two greyhounds - I usually use fresh veggies or frozen which adds cost. I know some people make stews that they add to commercial dog food as a supplement.

Greyt Treat Recipe:

2 cans 100% pure Pumpkin - no spices

1 cup powdered milk

1 cup organic flax seed meal

1/2 cup organic unsweetened applesauce or one VERY ripe banana

2 cups of organic oat flour

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix all ingredients by hand or with an electric mixer in a large mixing bowl. An electric mixer makes a fluffier batter and tends to yield more. Drop quarter size mounds (I use about half of an iced tea spoon) on a silicone cookie sheet (or a greased standard cookie sheet). The mounds can be spaced as closely as possible because the treats do not spread during baking.

Bake for 15 minutes to 20 minutes depending on how your oven temperature varies. Let cool for about 10 minutes before removing from cookie sheet.

Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator. This recipe makes about 130 small treats. If organic pumpkin is used, more flour may need to be added to give the treat batter more body. This recipe is very "forgiving" so feel free to experiment.

When an old dog goes off their food and there is no medical reason for it, this recipe has not failed me yet. I used it for Tuna the greyhound, and a year after she passed away I am now making batches for my 18 year old Llewlyn setter. Meatloaf for dogs:2 pounds lean ground beef3 eggs2 to 3 cups crushed dry food (I use the blender to crush it)1 cup peanut butter Mix it all together. Usually I mix the beef, eggs and dog food first, then add in the peanut butter. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake in cupcake trays (the above ingredients make a total of 24) if you want individual servings, or else use meatloaf pans (be sure to first coat with non-stick cooking spray, I use the alcohol-free variety). Optional: Top with a spoonful of crushed dog food if you have some left over.Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes. Once cooled, leftovers can be frozen to take out as needed.

This Recipe was posted by Sara not long ago . It is fabulous . :):):):)

Ours love these and are pretty crunchy too

2 cups whole wheat flour, 1 cup oats, 1/2 c dry milk, 1/2 t. salt, 1 cup peanut butter, 2 eggs, 1/2 c cold water

Preheat oven to 300-degrees.

combine first 4 ingredients thoroughly then add the rest and mix in mixer with paddle attachment or dough hook till stiff dough forms. Here is the recipe for homemade pedialyte. I was given this recipe by a children's hospital health care professional in 2004.

4 cups boiled water

1 cup apple juice

2 Tablespoons sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

Nutritional Yeast, or Red Star Yeast is a great supplement.

It is recommended for vegetarians as it is loaded with B vitamins that are in meat. The B vitamins help the formation of healthy red blood cells.

Many dogs who won't eat are tempted by the taste and the vitamins in it promote appetite.

My dogs get this daily and it has also given the very soft coats.
