silverfish
Quick question: I have some frozen chicken (unopened, commercially 'air-blast' frozen, and free range) which ran out of date at the end of January this year. It's been kept in a freezer in the garage, which is always well under the max. temperature, and is seldom opened. Will it still be OK for feeding the dogs? I know that the freezer burn doesn't matter too much, but what about potential food poisoning? Thanks! BootsyCollins
If it's been frozen since before that date, it's fine Quote Christie and Bootsy (Turt McGurt and Gil too) Loving and missing Argos & Likky, forever and ever. ~Old age means realizing you will never own all the dogs you wanted to. ~
silverfish
I bought it already frozen, and the expiration date is 'best before' end Jan 2011. Quote The plural of anecdote is not dataBrambleberry Greyhounds My Etsy Shop
BootsyCollins
But you bought it before that date, right? If so, you should be good! Houndtime
We, ourselves, have eaten "older" chicken. Our freezer is also, not opened everyday. You will know as it defrosts if there is a problem. Guest KennelMom
i think you'll be fine. i'd defrost it and as long as it didn't smell funny I'd feed it to the dogs.
Guest Swifthounds
Kept frozen, it will be fine for the dogs if you save it for YEARS. Dates are for optimum taste for humans, nothing to do with safety. Edited July 29, 2011 by Swifthounds
Guest Greyt_dog_lover
I believe salmonilla cannot reproduce below freezing, so therefore you dont have to worry about salmonilla.

silverfish
Thanks, everyone! It's in the pressure cooker steaming away gently as I type! I'm giving it a bit longer than normal, which should help to tenderise the frost bite, too. silverfish
Yep, it was! The dogs sucked it down, and because we're trying to get some weight on Ranger, he had several small meals and they finished up the whole thing in one evening with absolutely no sign of any problem. Thanks to everyone who replied. Quote The plural of anecdote is not dataBrambleberry Greyhounds My Etsy Shop
