Houndtime
Once again, the Fuzz Man has a sheath infection. We have been treating home for over a week with Ampicillin. This time we are trying a two week protocol and it doesn't seem to be working. Today I took him to a specialist at a referral facility. The doctor is an internist. She doesn't know what it is and was surprised that there was so much bacteria in the smear considering that he has been on antibiotics for over a week. She said he is full with several different bacteria. We are to complete the two week protocol and then stop. She took a bacterial culture and consulted with the resident dermatologist who suggested a fungal test. If we can find out, what infection he has, then hopefully we can get him treated properly. Today's visit was just under $400 and I was there two hours with him. I don't care about the cost if they can fix my boy. Think good thoughts for the Fuzz. Everyone at the facility was so impressed with his behavior, looks and personality. The doctor wrote a PS in her notes to me, thanking me for bringing in such a special boy and wrote that he is cute. Houndtime
I'm no vet, but I'd spray the bejeesus out of the sheath with colloidal silver We were using silver sulfadiazine cream as an external medication with very little result. I am not sure if this is what you are thinking of. Houndtime
I am wondering, if during the examination yesterday, they really cleaned out his shealth area. His pad in the belly band was very clean this morning. I don't know what they did during the exam as they took him away for about 25 minutes, brought him out, discussed the tests with me and then took him away again. Batmom
FWIW, if all else fails, one of my vets does not like to use antibiotics in these cases. She prefers to just clean well (with water or dilute Nolvasan solution) twice a day. Hugs and best luck. Guest greytbookert
oh man! I totally understand the frustration! Our Eric has recurring sheath infections with no obvious reason why they keep happening. Our typical course is to flush the sheath with nolvasan 2x a day for 10 days and some antibiotics. I hope Fuzzy feels better soon!

After I receive the first of the test results next week, I am going to mention this to the specialist.
