Walliered Posted January 2, 2011 Share Posted January 2, 2011 I am taking my grey to the vet tomorrow to have his blood checked for heartworms. It has been one year since I adopted him and I just want to make sure he is free from them. What else should I ask the vet to check for? He is a little weird as sometimes he pants and yawns for no reason. Other than that he seems to be fine. Thanks so much for any information. greyhead Posted January 2, 2011 Share Posted January 2, 2011 I'd get the greyhound special on TBD testing from Protatek. We had a panter too until he was diagnosed and treated. But then I've come to believe every greyhound should be tested for TBD's. Otherwise, place to start is a CBC + chemistry. Your vet probably sends that out to his/her local Antech or Idexx. No need to send that anywhere special. Guest Swifthounds Posted January 2, 2011 Share Posted January 2, 2011 If you're going to do TBD testing or a thyroid panel or similar (Protatek, Hemopet, or an university lab) you might consider having that lab run those tests and the CBC/Chem as it's almost always less than doing their testing through them and your general testing through your vet with his normal lab (Antech, Idexx, etc.). I might suggest getting some chemistries and a CBC (and maybe first morning catch urine sample) just so you have a baseline along with the heartworm test. You might also want to bring in a stool sample. I would probably just have the vet send them to his/her normal laboratory but, please make sure that you get a copy for your records. Greyhounds can run a little different on some of the blood tests so you do want to make sure that your vet is up-to-date on the greyhound normal values. Thanks If you want to do Protatek's tick testing, just call the lab and ask for a quote for the tick panel and for the panel plus the CBC/Chem. If you'd like to do thyroid testing through Hemopet or a university, call them and ask about the pricing for the tests. They can tell you about the packaging and how the tubes should be used and what should be spun down. Then you just ask the vet to draw the blood for you and either the vet can mail it out or (more likely) you can send it out yourself. Protatek you'd have to call.
