Hollis
Norm woke me up at around 1am to go out. VERY unusual. He was out for a while and when I finally went to check he was pooping. Dont know what he was doing before. Wandering? Eating grass? No clue. When we got up again at 7 I discovered he had throw up. He turned down breakfast this morning. (He did eat last night. Food/treats have not changed.) DP came home to discover he had thrown up in his crate during the day. He threw up when she let him out. Yellow bile-y. He was a little restless but is now lying down. He did drink, but that was before he went out and threw up. I have seen him drink since. Ears warm, nose dry. It has been very warm here the past few days. And we already have the a/c off. But he does have a fan all day. Could it be the heat? Can/should I give him anything to settle his tummy? He fasted himself this morning, should I fast him tonight? My fear in fasting him tonight and attempting breakfast is that he'll get sick during the day again. He gets VERY upset when he messes his crate. He shredded his comforter trying to get away from it. If he throws up again tomorrow... Thoughts? Norm rarely throws up and had NEVER turned down a meal!! My poor poopie............... greyhead
I don't know what you *should* do. All I can offer is that if it were me, I'd feed him tonight if and when he wants to eat. But I'd start him with half as much food as usual and give more later if he asked. I'd be tempted to fast him in the morning. (Our Shane had blowout-D in his run at the vet's last week and rubbed off a bunch of the skin on his nose while trying to use the blankets to cover it up. Messing up in these ways really upsets these guys.) Guest Energy11
WOW... sorry to hear this! HOTTER THAN HEck here, too, and yes, ACs off! I wanted to DIE yesterday... BUT, my greys are fine, and we've been in the low 80s with humidity. Sounds like you pup has a virus or something else. A lof of people on here believe in fasting ... I don't. An empty stomach is full of acids, and can make things worse. If this were MY dog, I'd give some boiled chicken and rice, mixed with Pepcid AC, (*generic is fine) 2Xs a day, and maybe a Gas X two times a day as well. OR, you can see your vet and get either prescription Science Diet ID or Purina EN, I keep EN here all the time for just this type of thing. If this doesn't resolve within a day or two, TOPS, I'd see the vet, as your pup could become dehydrated! Are the gums dry? If so, that is a sign of dehydration. Also, if you pick up the skin, and it stay "tented" for a few seconds, that, too is a sign of dehydration, and you do NOT want to mess with that... the dog needs to be seen. Hope your pup feels better soon! ... Good Luck, too!
Hollis
how about hamburg and rice? Or just plain kibble with no add in. The add in has been homemade liver based stew. I'd stay away from the kibble and the LIVER for a few days. I am GLAD he is drinking, as well. Another thing you can do, being he is drinking, is add Gatorade, 50/50 to his water ... helps keep the electrolytes in order and keeps him hydrated. (It wasn't clear if you made the stew specifically for your hound, or if it was for everyone...) Onions and garlic can be very upsetting to a dog's digestive system. Guest Energy11
NOOOOO ... you didnt' make him sick with liver. It is just LOADED with protein and hard to digest if you are sick . NOW, too much liver CAN sometimes cause pancreatitus. I AM no vet, but a retired paramedic and vet tech, so I don't, by any means, know it all. I have a friend who feeds her greyts liver once a week, and they are fine. I would lay off the liver until this passes. I DOUBT this is what made him sick, though. Yes, you boil hamburger in water, until it is brown Then, you mix it in with the well-boiled white rice. NO problem with adding the Powerade, either. A sports drink, is a sports drink :-)) IT STINKS when they are sick, but like us, they DO get "bugs" and they too, shall pass. Good Luck and hugs from us here! Now they have been getting about a tablespoon of the stew, which is liver, brown rice, carrots, sweet pots and peas at dinner. scrambled eggs in the morning. The stew changes based on whats on sale. I'd just hold off on it till he feels better. Hope this all passes for you soon! AND, the hot weather, too. I mean, it is supposed to be 60/40 here, and yesterday, it was 80/70! Guest Energy11
Honestly I really wonder if its the heat........... It COULD be, but as I mentioned, ... I ALMOST died from the stupid heat yesterday, but the puppers were fine (*except for the crappy thunderstorms)! No matter, I'd still give it a day or two on the bland diet, and see what happens. It is supposed to cool down there again, isn't it? TOMORROW HERE WILL BE MY KIND OF WEATHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 60/33. Yep, I belong up north again! Good luck! mychip1
Honestly I really wonder if its the heat........... My Dustin about a month ago threw up horribly, would not eat and had the big D. Still don't know what happened to him. Like you have said, the fact that he is drinking is good. Is he holding the fluid in at this point? mychip1
Maybe time for the vet tomorrow if he hasn't eaten by morning......I hate when they go more than one or two meals without wanting to eat......especially when you offer him the good stuff. Does he have a habit of eating stuff he's not supposed to, like stones or stuffy filling or socks? Does he have a temp? Is he arching his back? How do his eyes look - shiny bright or dull? Is he roaching like normal? Is he panting a lot? Could he have licked a frog in the yard? I have 7 dogs and a couple weeks ago I had a different dog sick every day. Newgreymom
I would try some Pepcid AC as Energy11 suggested. The stuff works great! Dr. Couto also recommends giving Pepto Bismol. It's worth a try..
cmc333
Holly, I second the opinion of pepto or pepcid AC. I have generic pepto tablets that I just rub peanut butter on and give to whoever is sick. Some of my pups are extremely smart about fasting themselves and refuse to eat till they know their tummy is okay. If it were me, I would give the pepto tonite and see how he feels in the morning. I'd give him some warm hamburg/rice mixture in warm water or low sodium beef broth and see if he'd eat that. It doesn't sound like anything too serious to me, but that's me. I'm a "wait and see" type when my kids are sick and throwing up. I wouldn't panic quite yet. I do think a thermometer and vaseline is a good idea to keep on hand tho. And yes, having a a sick dog every day is not fun. Thank God they took turns being sick. Today I have three limping dogs all at the same time. If it's not one thing, it's another.
