Guest grandy25
My greyhound was recently prescribed doxycycline for prevention of lyme disease titers from increasing. She is to be given 2 100mg tablets every 12 hours after food. She is drinking an unusually large amount of water and urinating very frequently. Does this medication make her unusually thirsty or is there a kidney problem?
TheFullHouse
I looked up the side effects and all they had were nausea, vomiting and runny poops. It didn't mention urinating more frequently for drinking more. I've never had to give mine the drug so maybe someone else who has will pop in and answer your question more thoroughly. Chicocat
I've never had any problems with a dog on Doxy. I know one adoption group that routinely put all new dogs on the TBD regimen of Doxy when they first come into their program. Quote Ann
Batmom
Likely tummy upset, even tho you're giving after food. Check with your vet re any interactions, but I would probably give 1 regular-strength pepcid (10mg famotidine), wait 30-40 minutes, feed meal or substantial snack, then give the doxycycline. RobinM
Beau has had doxy many times and no effects like you are describing. I too would try the pepcid and see if that helps. kudzu
This isn't normal, not in my experience, what I have heard from others nor what I've read. Could be her reaction to nausea as Batmom says. Also, the human references sometimes list dry mouth as a side effect. Could be possible for dogs, also. Would mention it to the vet if it continues. My girl lost her appetite but otherwise was fine. My male should no adverse reactions at all.
Guest zombrie
We have a lot of experience with Doxy, my shepherd attracts tick borne diseases like it's her job. My dad, brother and I have all also had lyme, and we've been on Doxy too. It is very common to have thirst and upset tummies. If it gets excessive, I would call up the vet.
