Guest argolola
While Lola is doing MUCH better with the pancreatitis, we don't want a recurrence. The doctor recommended chicken, rice, baby food and Ensure but I need more suggestions for variety. Thanks so much!
Batmom
Hmm, that's what I would've suggested. Hopefully some other folks will wander by with suggestions. I've not had a pancreatitis pup so have never had to watch the fat very carefully. Guest argolola
I know she's feeling better because she's already bored with this food and looking for something better in brother's bowl.
tbhounds
Are you already feeding the Hills I/D food? It's low fat and easily digestable.
Guest argolola
Yes, she has Hill's I/D but she is being real picky, so I end up giving most of it to her brother when she turns her nose up. She wants chunks of chicken and she would prefer to be hand fed. Last night I boiled her some ground chicken and mixed in with some rice. I don't think there is much variety in low fat meat. What about 93/7 ground beef? Someone said that dogs can't have turkey, but I don't know if this is true. Batmom
Dogs can have turkey, no problem. Here I can get it ground, sometimes very cheap. Anything but the chicken, I'd probably drain the fat off before serving. Easy way to do that, with beef for example, is cook on the stovetop in a bit of water (maybe a cup per pound of meat) and drain off the water once it's cooked. tbhounds
I would stay away from the dark meat (such as legs, thighs)it contains much more fat than the white meat (breast). Oh, I wanted to add that when you buy store bought ground it usually will be from a dark/white meat blend. You might want to grind your own or have a butcher do it for you. krissn333
Lean ground turkey and/or lean ground beef are fine. For Sutra I would either feed it raw in ball form or I would boil it. Plain oatmeal mixed with low fat cottage cheese and some turkey baby food was also enjoyed here....you can also make some macaroni or mashed potatoes and use those in place of the oatmeal for variety. Low fat plain or vanilla yogurt is also good with oatmeal. Rice mixed with boiled ground beef is also okay. Sutra eats Solid Gold Wolf King now that he's got the weight back...it's low in fat and he likes it and I like that it has good ingredients. It has a good protein level too, which has really (I feel) helped him get some muscle back. He's a pretty active 12 year old! At first I would pour some warm water on it and let it sit for a few minutes to make it a little bit mushy (thus easier to digest). Now he just eats it dry, sometimes with some beef broth poured over it.
