Newbie here: Molly just arrived, and she is in need of a pedicure. What's the best way to handle this? She is super shy, so I don't want to freak her out with me doing it and possibly screwing it up, and I'm worried if I take her to a groomer she might get upset with all the little dogs there.

Any suggestions?

If you don't feel comfortable trimming her nails yourself, then you should have a groomer do it for you.

I used a groomer for years until I bought a Dremmel tool, I didn't trust myself not to quick them and make their nails bleed with the standard sissors type of nail trimmer.

If you hurt your dog a few times - they can be hard to trim in the future.

Take her to Petsmart and have it done. No appointment necessary and you just wait while it's being done. Super quick and cheap.

We take Nellie to our vet. It is more expensive ($13), but she is in a room with just us and they give her lots of treats :) Our vet is much more conveniently located than the Petsmart, as well. We do take her to Petsmart for a bath + nail trim = $22.

Our Petsmart requires you to bring a shot record on the first visit. Then because they can never find us in the computer, I bring the records any time I go.

And you are there and watching while they are doing it. Make sure they don't put her on the table. They can do the nails while she is standing on the floor.

Actually, doing the dog's nails on the table is safer. The dog has better traction on the padded table top than on the slippery floor, and dogs usually move around less when they're off the floor and on the table. Also, some dogs behave better when mom isn't in the room for the nail trim; if that's the case for your baby, the PetSmart groomer might ask you step outside. You can still see (through the window), but the fidgety dog can't see you.

If you go to PetSmart, though, spend the $2 extra to get your dog's nails Dremeled: much less likely to have a quicked nail (although it's possible), and the resulting nails will be shorter and smoother. It also will give you an idea whether your dog is a good candidate for Dremeling at home. If so, Wal*Mart carries a Dremel (the "Mini Mite," I think) for about $20 and the speed on that model is just what you'll need.

And, yeah, I'm a dog groomer. At PetSmart. :)
