Guest Greensleeves
Any good thoughts you can spare will be much appreciated! Tessie hasn't had anaesthesia since she was spayed (7 years ago!), and of course we're a little nervous. She's my heart dog, and we've been putting this dental off for a couple of years. But she has a fractured molar, and it's well beyond time. Thanks.
duncan41
Sending prayers for Tessie's dental! She'll do fine, I'm sure. You, on the other hand, will be a nervous wreck! Do you know if they will be doing her first tomorrow morning? Were you given pre-op instructions? There was a short thread about dentals, feeding a snack at the last possible moment the night before and scheduling the dental early in the day since many have had "drunk" dogs to take home. PatricksMom
Sending good thoughts and white lights. Chances are very, very good everything will be perfectly fine, but I know personally I drive myself crazy worrying. I've found it's best to keep myself busy, and to remind myself that I have an excellent vet who takes as good a care of my dog as she does her own. You might pick up some canned dog food for when she comes home. My vet says it's not necessary (although Patrick's never needed extractions) but it makes me feel good to baby him a little after a tough day. MaryJane
One other thing that might happen and you should be aware of is that you might notice that Tessie's temperature might seem to be a little lower (ie.. Tessie might feel colder than usual). When I noticed this on my boy, I just covered him up with a cotton towel. Someone already noted the "drunk dog" syndrome when they are not completely out of the anesthesia and the only thing I would add there is too make sure that you keep him quiet (so he doesn't hurt himself) if he seems like he is still slightly "dazed". Guest Greensleeves
Thanks, everyone! She's home now, wandering about and getting a drink. They put a shamrock bandanna on her for St. Patrick's Day, which brought back memories (her mama Nelly had one just like it when they sent her home after staying with them when we found her. ). They did two extractions--the scheduled one for the fractured pre-molar, and an incisor that had broken and had visible pulp! I can't imagine that she wasn't in *excruciating* pain from those, poor kiddo. Her cheek is a little swollen from the pre-molar extraction (they have three very deep, strong roots, and they have to be broken to remove them), and she's acting a little bit drunk; hopefully she'll settle down here some and rest for a while. CaliforniaGreys
Good to hear that she's home. Someone already mentioned her body temp. Anesthesia does lower their body temp. When Misty came home from her dental, I had an electric blanket on for her and she just loved the warmth. For the swelling I applied ice as much as she would allow it and it helped a great deal. Please give her hugs from us Quote Missing my little Misty who took a huge piece of my heart with her on 5/2/09, and Ekko, on 6/28/12 For the sick, the lost, and the homeless
