Logan May Need To See An Orthopedic Specialist

Recommended Posts

I haven't posted much about Logan and his back leg so here are the highlights. For years Logan has limped on his left hind leg. He has corns and there was not much we could do. He has therapaw booties and uses them whenever we go to M&G's and the like. However, for the last 3 or 4 months he has started to tripod more and limp less. I spoke to my vet about it and he advised that we would need to get some X-rays just to determine if there is more to it than just the corns. With all the money going out with Gypsy, we couldn't afford to take Logan in at the time. We discussed giving him some daily pain meds, I was concerned about long term use and destroying his liver. We started him on Tramadol to take the edge off the pain and he has been less grumpy. He has been using his leg less and less and has fallen twice in the last few weeks, so we finally made the appt. DH and I were pretty sure the problem was in his hip and the vet seemed to agree after manipulating the leg. However, the X-rays show his hips to be in perfect condition. It turns out the area of concern is in his knee. There was no evidence of cancer (whew) and no arthritis but the belief is that there is ligament damage. We are putting him on Rimadyl for the next 10 days to see if there is any improvement. Our next step will be to see a specialist. 2008 just hasn't been our year!

I am so sorry. I know the feeling of 2008 not being our year. GT has had a horrible year where the pups are concerned and I lost my job this year. I hope the Rimadyl helps.

Just a note: For Lee's LS he was on Tramadol and Novox (generic Rimadyl) at the same time.

Sending hugs and healing thoughts to Logan.

Whew! Did the xray take in the whole leg? So glad it wasn't his hip! I have one with a mystery limp, but with negative x-rays and no reaction to any/all manipulation from her toenails to her hips. How old is Logan? Sending healing light and prayers for Logan!

Logan has been on Rimadyl for 3 days and now he is on a hunger strike. He barely ate any dinner last night and wouldn't eat any breakfast. He is supposed to take the Rimadyl with food so this morning I broke up a dinner roll and spead some peanut butter on it just so he would have something in his belly. He has thrown up a frothy yellow liquid 3 times so far this morning. Any ideas?

Sounds like the meds are upsetting his tummy. Try giving him some Pepcid about a half hour before you give him the meds and see if that helps. Hope he starts feeling better soon.

edited to add: If that doesn't help, the vet can give you something stronger for his tummy.

I'll try the Pepcid, how much do I give him?

1 xtra strength (or regular strengh) 30 minutes before he eats. One a day is all you need.

Stop the Rimadyl--speak to your vet on Monday!

Ditto. If it's upsetting his tummy to the point he won't eat and is throwing up bile, I would not give the med.

Does he have corns on the leg he isn't using?

Hugs and best luck with your pup.
