rschultz
I talked to the vet so much he said i talk to him more than his wife does..lol. lexie still is bad he is giving her two antibiotics at once flygle and abone (spelling). doing blood test tomorrow. her stool test came back negative. he said if this doesnt work she will need colonoscopy. He said when we go away next week , we can give the kennel immdioum if she needs it. I worry about all those antibioics and told him but he insisted she stay on both of them right now. Guest SoulsMom
Did she say anything about what she should be eating right now while on the meds? Or how to put some weight back on?

Guest SoulsMom
Hopefully that might give you some answers. When Soul's pudding poo began he had his blood tested at Tufts when it all started, before any meds were dispensed. I don't know if that was standard protocal, or if they did it because of his Lupus, but I was glad to hear that his kidney and liver values look good before proceeding . . . . silverfish
I know this might seem too simple to be considered, but when we went through a similar thing with Jim, it turned out to be lactose intolerance. He would get intractable diarrhoea if he had lactose in his diet. Didn't respond well to binding agents or antibiotics etc, and would go from not much to bloody and slimy within a few days. Might be worth thinking about her diet, perhaps. Thinking good thoughts for Lexie. rschultz
thanks. i thought of the lactose thing cause i am and so i havent been giving her anything with dairy. I hope this blood test will show something. I hate for her to have a colonoscopy or edoscopy. My gut feeling tells me we will have to do that. It is just so weird cause for a year and a half she was fine. We take her to a kennel which she has been before and ever since she hasnt been the same. I wouldnt be so worried but we are leaving next thursday and I want her to get better by then. Wishful thinking I guess on my part. Today s the blood test so hopefully we can rule a few things out or in. (excuse the pun) ..lol Quote Lexie is gone but not forgotten.💜

stlgrey
My vet didn't jump right to wanting to do a colonscopy or some type of internal looking around. You might want to get an opinion from an internist if there is one in the practice. When we ran out of options (blood work, x-rays, etc.) My vet looked at her lymph nodes and checked into other things. Did your current vet even offer to do a tick panel? I wasn't even considering doing a colonscopy on Sierra before we ruled out any internal disease or condition. I asked my vet if we should consult with a specialist since her diarrhea went on for months. We never dreamed they would find histo.
Guest Winterwish
It could be the rice,or the chicken too for that matter. You could use pasta as an alternative to rice. Have you ever tried a fish or grain free kibble?
carronstar
Can I ask what might be a dumb question? Does Lexi eat much turkey? I ask because Morgaine had terrible pudding like/mucus poos for several months and I never connected it to the fact that her hot dog treats were turkey or that the turkey that my co-worker always sent home with me from her over-stuffed deli sandwiches. I was talking with a neighbor one night about it when they said that maybe her system couldn't tolerate the turkey, she knew a lot of dogs who couldnt'. I stopped the turkey and within a week, "happy poos" were had. Maybe there is something that is just not agreeing with Lexi and it is so basic that no one has even thought of it. I learned with Scarlett that rice doesn't work for all dogs. It took a few months to learn that the rice trick didn't work for her. They keep us on our toes. Sending lots of prayers and good thoughts for Lexi and you.
rschultz
lexie was eating pro plan salmon for a year and half. she only started having the dierrhea after the kennel. We saw the vet today. he did a full panel blood work. cost me 230 bucks so that should cover a lot..lol. He said continue the 2 antibiotics and giver her immodium. the immodium i thought would work but it hasnt. he thinks it is in her upper instestines. he said he is going to consult a collegue before he sends me to a specialist. I just feel like i am running out of time cause we are going away next thurs for a long weekend. I was hoping she would start getting better. but do check out my post on her new bonnet...lol. she may not feel too good but she looks fabulous!!!!!! rschultz
vet called blood work came back. the epi was a lil higher than normal. he is going to do two more blood tests. one for pancreatis and a cobalime (spell). If thise come up neg then they will scope her both ends. She is still on the two antibiotics. Today was the first day I didnt have to give her immodioum. She actually had a soft stool. yippeeee. We are putting her in a kennel for four days next week. The vet said that would be fine as long as she stays on the bil jac and no treats. He said if he finds she has pancreatis then no bil jac. I guess that is high in fat. He said there are other low fat kibbles out there. Anyone have experience with this epi thing or pancreatis? and what foods would be good ty. Guest mandm
. Anyone have experience with this epi thing or pancreatis? and what foods would be good ty. EPI - so her TLI was a little off? And they are going to test folate/cobalamin? I think those are usually tested in conjunction with TLI. Anyway, my greyhound flunked the folate/cobablamin test, low on both, indicating SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) and worse, since folate was also low. I tried meds, Tylan, which is similar to Metronidazole, and it helped a little. But the thing that fixed him was putting him on a low-fat raw diet. He's fine as long as he stays on the diet. No meds or supplements other that folic acid & cobabalamin (vit B 9 & 12). It just seems really odd that her problems were brought on by a short stay at a boarding kennel. Pancur & Albon should really have helped if it was parasite related. I'd try raw before scoping, which is really expensive and requires a pretty long fast. I assume she doesn't have much cushion left. ETA - Is it the Biljac frozen she is on, not the dry stuff? I think it is the frozen that is very helpful for dogs with GI troubles. Specifically the frozen, not the dry version. Edited November 7, 2008 by mandm
Guest lizmego
Anyway that you could find a pet sitter or another adopter in your area to take care of her while you're gone instead of kenneling? The kenneling could cause unneeded stress on an already upset system.
rschultz
yes i use the biljac frozen. the vet said if she ends up needing to be on a low fat diet biljac will be out but for now it is fine. I prefer not to feed raw so what kind of kibbles would be good? what kind of snacks can I feed her? She loves her pm and after dinner snacks. Right now i just give her the biljac and a snack of a lil applesuce. Quote Lexie is gone but not forgotten.💜

I think you would be pretty safe feeding lean meat as snacks - cooked, raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried. I know you still don't know the cause of her problems, but if they turn out to be similar to my GH's problems, then I would avoid carbs & processed fat. how long of a fast for the scope? like more than a day??? My vet requires 48 hours.
