Our Tripods And The Winter

Recommended Posts

Snow and ice are coming and that makes me nervous that Asia could slip. We live on private property so I do not have to worry about salt that can burn pads. We always snow blow paths (a figure 8) on the lawn so the dogs can run and potty. Asia will have to have a different set up. Depending on the conditions, we will have a supply of sand and an area shoveled or blown just for her. I would absolutely die if she slipped and fell.

Please share other advice for protecting our tripod babies

Audrey, I put down lots of sand for my 4-legged kids! The best I've found is the "traction sand" or "tube sand" -- sold in tubes for putting in the back of your pickup truck :lol . It's a bit grittier than some other types of sand.

Tip #2 is, keep a tube or two of sand INSIDE. That keeps it warm. Which means that when you go to spread it, it melts into the snow/ice a little and really provides good grip instead of just blowing around on the surface.

I do use some salt to melt ice where I have pavement. If the pups have to walk across it before it's melted, I just wipe/rinse their feet off when they come in. And I make sure they don't eat any salty snow. Never had a problem.

Hope Asia has a safe, uneventful winter.

Oh man, something else to worry about!

We have 5 steps in our house both the front and back. THe front is blue stone and the back is decking.

We will keep it clean and sanded at all times and have a clean path for Polli into the lawn in the back and front.

We normally do not get snow but I have a feeling this will be the year. Murphy's law.

We are on the "tropical" south shore of LI. Very rarely. We usually get 2-3 inches and it's gone as quicky as it came.

The last big snow we got was about 3 years ago and we were in Puerto Rico and the one before that was '03.

I think you will be surprised- at least I was! Dempsey's amputation was right in the middle of January last year. Soon after he came home (first week or two) we got a lot more snow. I spent a bunch of time shoveling a path for him into the yard as well as a large area for him to potty in. The first time out in the snow, he walked right through that potty area and into the huge pile of snow I had made just so he could pee and poop in the middle of it. :) He continued to do that so I quit with the shoveling of the yard. I purchased that Safety Paws stuff for the front sidewalk and driveway and he was good to go. I tried to keep him off the main sidewalks that were icy, but he'd get to going quick and I'd get scared to pull on the leash out of fear I'd knock him off balance. Well, one of those times, I was the one who fell, not him! :) Good luck!

For some reason, we just don't and I am really OK with it. When it does happen, it happens. The south shore where we are inclines on the coast and we get are missed more often than not.

The Pocono house, I wouldn't even THINK about going to in the winter months. I hear the ice is deadly there. No thanks, we''ll stick with the tropical south shore!!!!

;)
