Guest tuxie
Our vet seems to think he is suffering from an autoimmune diease that is eating away his muscle. She had prescribed for him Prednosone but the side effects of the constant urination were stressing him out so bad that after 4 days we discontinuted it today. Tomorrow he is going to start Azathioptine. We noticed today that he looks so skinny, but he is eating normally, gums look good. We just feel he is so down, we don't know if he is having a hard time with the pills or if he is maybe doing thourgh a withdrawl. We are trying to find a vet who specializes in greyhounds b/c all his blood work came back normal so we are at a loss.......Could the weight loss be b/c he is peeing so much? ahicks51
Dr. Cuoto at OSU is in Columbus, about 3 hours from Pittsburgh. Quote Coco (Maze Cocodrillo) Minerva (Kid's Snipper)
Guest KennelMom
Pred turned Grandpa into a walking skeleton. He can't take it at all. He was taking a small amount for an auto-immune condition secondary to Ehrlichia. I remember meeting a greyhound once that was soooo skinny - she had a condition that prevented her body from absorbing protein.
ZoomDoggy
4 days of prenisone wouldn't account for that much muscle-volume loss. I'd be concerned about something very serious. I don't mean to frighten you, but if Dr. Couto is only 3 hours away, I'd be taking him there asap. Quote ~Aimee, with Flower, Alan, Queenie, & Spodee Odee! Batmom
I would get him to a specialist ASAP. In my experience, the prednisone "pee" effect wears off in @ 7-10 days; once they're used to the dose, they have to pee somewhat more often but not unreasonably. Hugs and prayers for your boy. Guest MZH
Did you check for tick diseases? I would rule them out before starting the Azathioptine. Marcia in SC

Guest trevdog
I agree, something else is going on, that much weight loss that quickly is not pred. I haven't heard of any auto-immune issues causing that much weight loss, but I'm no expert.

But I agree that OP needs to have tickborne diseases ruled in or out. Quote Coco (Maze Cocodrillo) Minerva (Kid's Snipper)
