Worried About My Friend's Greyhound

Hello everyone--

I am posting on behalf of my dear friend's greyhound Cassidy. She is at the hospital with swelling and pain around her neck and jaw, and the vet just told my friend that she has fluid around her heart. Cassie is 9 years old, I think--the symptoms started the other night when she was lethargic, yelping when she moved and was off her food. Yesterday it progressed to the swelling and they kept her overnight at the vet's.

When my friend told me about the swelling I immediately thought about lymphoma, but I am confused about the fluid around her heart. The vet has put her on doxy, in case it is a bug bite/infection kind of thing. I am so worried about her and would love it if she could get some good GT prayers and chants, like "just a bug bite" etc. Any wisdom or ideas would be welcomed, I am so concerned that this could be lymphoma and if so, what would be a good treatment protocol? Should I tell her to call Dr. Couto? I know he is the one to call for OS, but lymphoma?

Anyway, thanks for listening and any prayers are welcome!!!

Dr. C can help with all kinds of cancer.

Sending prayers!

Everyone talks about Dr. C. Sure wish he/she was here in the NH area. So many friends could've used the expert advice/care for their greys.

Dr. Couto is helping us with Bonnie's lymphoma and chemotherapy. He is amazingly quick to respond and provide us with his recommendations.

:goodluck I really hope it's something simple and not anything more serious. Please keep us updated and let us know what they find out.

If it started overnight, it could be something like lymphoma but is more likely to be an abscessed tooth or infected salivary gland -- hope so, because those sure are more fixable!

Sending prayers.

Hi everyone--thanks so much for the prayers and good thoughts. Cassie is still in the hospital but should be coming home today. Apparently the swelling has reduced significantly around her jaw and face, so it seems they are thinking this was some sort of infection rather than lymphoma right now (I assume that swelling from lymphoma would not have responded to doxycycline). She still has fluid around her heart, but they did all kinds of tests and ultrasounds and have not found any other masses or other tumors, etc. So I would guess that maybe she has some kind of cardiac issue? I recommended that my friend take Cassie to a cardiologist at U. Penn to get an opinion, if it seems to be a heart problem. I will keep you all posted--thanks again for the prayers, as always they are helping!!

Thanks so much for the good thoughts and prayers! I just wanted to let everyone that is following this thread know that my friend has joined GT and posted her questions about her dog's condition. She did not know how to post a new thread, though, so I copied and moved it to a separate thread entitled "Cardiac problems in greyhounds"--any suggestions and experience would be greatly welcomed!
