Pannus

Recommended Posts

I've had two, Lizzie and Lewis, diagnosed with Pannus in the last six months. I know it's not contagious and my vet assures me there's nothing I could have done to prevent it, but two in six months???? I'm feeling like a bad mother here. Dr. Stanton tried to explain it to me and I've looked at everything out on the Internet but I'm still not sure I understand what causes it. Both of them are on Optimmune which my vet says is the most effective for keeping it in check. Is this the course you all out there have your hounds w/ Pannus on? Is there something else I can do?

Alan has pannus for years - he is on prednisolone sodium acetate drops daily. I never hear of Optimmune, but there are different drops out there.

My Jade was diagnosed about a year and a half ago with Pannus. She gets Prednisolone drops and Cyclosporin drops on alternate days. She goes to a veterinary opthalmologist every 6 months for her check-ups and right now he says it is well-managed. It is not curable. You don't say where you live-I am in Florida so I take precautions to keep her out of the mid-day sun as much as possible. I walk her in shady areas as much as I can since the sunlight can aggravate it. She has had a few flare-ups but nothing too extreme. Also her eye doc said to keep the walks to a minimum on windy days to keep things from getting in her eyes. Please don't feel like a bad mother-I really don't think it is anything we can prevent. You are a good mother by getting them diagnosed and giving them the eyedrops. I know it is a scary diagnosis to hear and especially to have two babies with it but it is managable. Also I would recommend bringing them to a vet opthalmologist rather than the regular vet if you have not done so yet. Good luck to you and your Lizzie and Lewis.

Tipper has had Pannus for over four years. He gets NeoPolyDex ointment in his eyes twice a week. That's his "maintenance dose" after the first year of more frequent drops to reduce the encroaching tissue and blood vessels. It's been easy for us to manage, as we were lucky to catch it early, and we have a great veterinary ophthalmologist. Our regular vet can't even detect the pannus anymore. :)

I'm sorry you've had the diagnosis twice in such a short time. Carl was just diagnosed with it last week. The vet told me to try and keep him out of the sun from 10 - 3, that morning and evening walks are fine. I asked about walking him in the shade, he said it wouldn't make that much difference as it's not about the UV rays hitting him, it's about the UV rays taken in by his eyes. I now check weather.com in the mornings to make sure the UV index is low before we go out for walks. I don't know what I did before the internet!

Like everyone else said - it's genetic. I have had my Pere for three years - his vision is fine, but he gets his drops every day and if we are going out for any time in bright sunlight, he wears Doggles. Look into these eyes - they have pannus... Pere:

Thor was having problems finding a home because of his pannus, so we adopted him in April. I don't think the pannus is a problem for him:

As you can tell - he sees quite well. He also gets one drop a day and Doggles when he's going to be out in the sun for any length of time. They both see an eye specialist in Philly once a year.

There is no way that you caused this - they were sent them to you because you would take care of them.

Thanks for all of the help. I missed all of the signs with Lizzie so she was far more advanced by the time she was diagnosed. She's doing very well on Optimmune. Lewis....the minute I thought his eyes didn't look right he was off to the vet. Luckily, I caught him much earlier than Lizzie. I had a good look at his eyes this afternoon and I can really see what's going on. I think I'm going to ask for a referral to a specialist we have here in Richmond. Thanks again!

Yours look awesome!!! Have you noticed any problems with them seeing at night? Lizzie, who is pretty cautious, doesn't venture too far out in the yard at night. I haven't noticed that so much with Lewis. I'm going to have to invest in some Doggles for these two!

Thor runs into the screen door at night - he has a problem seeing the screen door when he is outside at night and the inside of the house is well lit. Because of this he agonizes over coming in - standing in the corner of the yard, staring at the house. I used to go out with a leash, catch him (with food - it took a long time) and walk in with him - and he was panicked every time. Sometimes we had to use a sqwaker just to catch him!

He has a tendency to run in full bore when he finally makes up his mind to "go for it" and when he hits, he hits hard. He has bent the patio door! I have safety pinned white streamers to the screen doors - inside and out. I have also started just closing the glass door when he is out a night - he seems able to see that.
