Newgreymom
Dylan has infected anal glands and the vet injected panalog ointment into each of the anal glands. I asked about oral antibiotics but he said no. Does anyone know if the panalog is the best route to go? Man did they stink...
Guest DoofBert
Not sure what is considered normal.. I know when our Sir D had them, they were expressed and he was given oral antbiotics....needed to have two courses of the meds to clear the infection. I also applied warm compresses to his bottom to make sure everything drained out.
tbhounds
Usually panalog is infused into the gland and they are given oral antibotics too! Maybe they weren't too infected that's why your Vet didn't dispense antibotics????
GreyPoopon
Cora has been through two rounds of infected anals. The first time they were very very bad. The vet infused her glands, which she said was the normal procedure. She then said that the glands were so bad she would also prescribe oral antibiotics. She also re-infused the glands once or twice more at one or two-week intervals. The second time we caught the infection earlier, and she infused the glands once without adding oral meds. That proved to be sufficient. So, at least at the clinic I go to, oral meds are not used unless the infection is very bad. Guest LynnM
It depends on how bad they are. If they're not that awful, then no need for oral abx. My vet uses a "homebrew" concotion of Liquichlor, Baytril Otic and something else for anal glad treatments. There are lots of treatments out there for this unfortunate issue.
