Merlin's Ripped Toe Nail

Recommended Posts

Merlin's toe nail, which he ripped out a week ago on the ice, is healing very slowly. So far, we haven't needed to go to the vet though, as it doesn't look like it's gotten infected... phew. I have spoken to the vet twice this week and we've been told to keep doing what we've been doing and call if we notice a bad odor, swelling, redness or depression. We put a gauze pad, rolled gauze to keep it in place, and one of those Pawz disposable booties on him 4 times a day - basically whenever we take him out for a walk.

He has yelped a couple of times but he's been okay, considering... still interested (very interested ) in food, playing with his stuffies, and cuddles.

Here are a couple of pics - before the accident and after:

I remember when one of our greys tore out a toe nail. It did seem to take forever to heal and then it slowly grew back. We also kept it covered and I treated it with topical antibiotic given to me by our vet. Hang in there - it will start to heal in time. (I love the photos of Merlin - he is such a sweetheart!). We are sharing the same Maine winter - snow, snow, & more snow!

No sign of a nail at all yet... but as long as it doesn't get infected, I don't care how long it takes...
