cmc333
Gt'ers are all knowledgable when it comes to thyroids and TBDs, so I'm hoping someone can help me. Gypsy has low thyroid and has been on meds for 3 years. We get her re-tested (just T4) once a year to see how stable her thyroid is. The meds make a huge difference with her - she has classic signs when off the meds. When we lived in Texas, my vet made me come in between 4 and 5 hours after giving Gypsy her pill to take her blood. Now that I've moved to Missouri and have a new vet, they didn't say anything about the timing of the pill versus the blood taking. And I didn't even think about it then. They said her T4 came back "high normal" (I don't know the number - I have to call back and get that). But I'm wondering if the fact that only 2-1/2 hours passed between her meds and the blood taking is a factor in the higher T4. The vet would like me to decrease her doseage from 2x a day to just once. (.6 mg). What do y'all think? Is the timing a factor or should I ignore it? Should I have the test redone and time the pill vs. vet visit to be between 4 and 5 hours? Opinions please... --Connie--
CaliforniaGreys
I have always been told that the timing makes a difference and it shouldn't be any more than 5 hours after taking the pill. But I know people here know a heck of a lot more than I do Quote Missing my little Misty who took a huge piece of my heart with her on 5/2/09, and Ekko, on 6/28/12 For the sick, the lost, and the homeless
PatricksMom
My vet says timing makes a big difference, and I have to come in 3-4 hours after taking the pill (and they write down when he took it, so I'm assuming they factor in the exact time.) tbhounds
Drawing blood just 2 1/2 hours post medication would make a huge difference in your results with dogs. You should wait 4-6 hours after giving the medication. The clinic should have told you that when you made the appointment. Sometimes the Doctors can guess/judge the results given to them but, to really be sure I would re-draw the blood.
Burpdog
Yes, 4-6 hours. Retest on meds should be 2.0 to 5.0 Quote Diane & The Senior Gang Burpdog Biscuits
cmc333
Thank you everybody! I knew someone here would know the answer. So I will call and get another appt. for a blood draw and be careful of the timing of the meds. Wish I had thought of the timing BEFORE the last time; hate to pay for another visit/test. But for sure I'll remember about the timing when next year rolls around. Thanks again, all you knowledgeable folks. --Connie--
