Guest greytexplorer
Can anyone explain, in medical detail, the surgical procedure for removing corns from a greyhoound's foot? My dogs don't have this problem, but I was wondering. ......yeah, I'm weird like that...
turbotaina
Although surgery is generally not recommended for corns, it basically involves an incision into the pad, cutting the corn out as far as its root goes and suturing the incision. It's a fairly basic surgery, but healing is long and difficult. For pictures and a better explanation, see: Grassmere Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). HopeForHounds
A number of people have had a great result using bee propolis. I know Xan posted about it a while ago. I passed that info on to a friend and now her grey only has one corn left. Batmom
The procedure we've used for Zema's relatively small corns isn't surgery but rather "hulling" -- basically, plucking the corn out of the pad. Description here: http://www.grassmere-animal-hospital.com/corn_hulling.htm Generally no bleeding, no big trauma, no anaesthesia required. And for Zema, virtually no recovery period. She's walking normally, without pain, as soon as the corn is removed. Not all corns are exactly the same, but in Z's case (and for any corn where the hulling procedure would work), there's a discontinuity between the corn and the rest of the pad, with only a teeny tiny attachment point / blood supply at the bottom of the corn. Once or twice we've seen a little pinprick of blood from that but usually nothing. Vet pries that sucker out of there and she doesn't even flinch (she'd rather not be held still for the 1-2 minutes it takes to do it, but that's another issue). Andromeda
*Bumping* Just wondering if anyone knows the dosage for the bee propolis? After searching post I can't find any mention on the capsule dosage and noticed it comes in several dosages. Also is it something I can buy in a local store or internet order only? turbotaina
You should be able to get it in your local health food store. Contact Xan for dosage - she was giving it to one of hers so she can probably give you an idea. Quote Meredith with Heyokha (HUS Me Teddy) and Crow (Mike Milbury). Ruth
I have used Bee Propolis and I used the liquid and put 5 drops in Tess' food. Since she doesn't always eat all her kibbles I put it in her cottage cheese for 3 weeks. I also used 3 drops and mixed it with Aloe Vera Juice and rubbed it on the corn. It worked very well. Since it is an anitbotic you shouldn't use it more than 3 weeks and then a couple of weeks break before using it again if necessary. You should be able to buy it at any good health food store. Hope this helps. Ruth

Still needing the dosage and can't find any reference to dosage given in capsule form in any post or on the net. Xan's inbox is still full so I have not been able to send a PM.
