Guest gonewtthewind1
Hi!, My mom and dad's greyhound, Skippy, went to the vet yesterday and they think that he has lymphoma (did I spell it right??) They have sent off stuff, and we are waiting for the results. At that point we will start talking to specialists. Has anyone has any experience with this? My parents are really upset about this. When I left home, they "replaced" me with Skippy. He is a wonderful boy. My dad has never had a dog that he loves this much. If anyone has any suggestions for us, please let us know. Thanks!, Becky
ZoomDoggy
Meet with an oncologist. They will be able to tell you your options. I'm sorry to hear the diagnosis, and wish you good luck. Guest charmsmom
One of my cats had lymphoma. We met with an oncologist and decided on chemo. Yes, it was pricey! Once we started treatment, the vet gave him six months to a year, at most. Because we were diligent, we beat the cancer, and he lived another FIVE YEARS! Even my vet was amazed. He crossed to the Rainbow Bridge about five weeks ago when his cancer finally won.
greysandmollie
I went thru lymphoma with my first grey, Rascal. I opted to go thru chemo. He was my first dog and the love of my life. Yes, there is a definate cost consideration. I worked with a local oncologist here in Cincinnati and we went thru three different drugs. Eventually each one would lose its effectiveness. The last one was kind of a hail Mary which had side effects. The first two didn't effect his quality of life at all. He was a little more tired the days he went thru treatment. But the treatment was just an IV port that allowed the to directly put the drugs into him. It was pretty quick and painless. The last drug basically drove his white cell count down too far and we ended up at the ER for a night of fluids and massive antibiotics. The vet thought it was time for euthansia then and I said no. He lived a total of 15 months from diagnosis and six months after we stopped treatment. I would do it all over in a heartbeat. retiredracers
Skipper was my foster for over a year... one of the sweetest, most gentle dogs I have ever met. I actually kept him longer because Becky (the OP) mentioned that her parents would be in the market for another greyhound when she moved out. I just knew that Skipper was meant to be with her family (some of the nicest people I have ever met). I work at the vet that diagnosed Skipper yesterday and while Becky and her dad were here I tried to be strong but after they left I just broke down crying. I just love this boy soooo much (would have kept him but he really didn't like our long hours AND he had the perfect family waiting for him). Skipper's prelim labwork came back looking pretty good and he is in greyt shape (other than this da*n cancer). I hope that this will help him beat it. I gave Becky Dr. Couto's info yesterday and they are supposed to be contacting him. I mentioned that they might want to see about having him seen by him but I don't know if that's doable (8 hour drive one way). Guest gonewtthewind1
Skippy is a real baby. I took one look at him and said that's the dog for my dad. We are going to fight this, we are just not sure how to do it. At the least, we will be consulting with Dr. C. Don't know if we'd be going there or not. I'll keep everyone posted. montgomery2524
We had a wolfhound mix that developed lymphoma at 8 years of age and we opted not to do chemo. The vet was telling us if the chemo was successful we may get 6-12 months but the cancer would return and treating it a second time is not as sucessful. Instead we treated with a natural approach and Gizmo was with us another 8 mos. You would not have known she was sick until the last two days. If you decide on chemo I would also look at things to boost their immune system. We went with a raw diet and several other things. If you are interested PM me and I will send you a list of what all we did. If you decide to do this it is something that your oncologist would need to know about! Guest sassichari
My grey Nala was 9 when she was diagnosed with lymphoma. She was given 6 months with or with out treatment. I opted to forgo chemo and went with prednisone only. Well my sweet angel lasted an amazing 2 years to everyones surprise before she crossed to the bridge! No pain, sickness from chemo or suffering. For US at that time it was the right choice. I did not have the wonderful resources of this site at that time it was 6 years ago that she was diagnosed, 4 since she has passed. Please listen carefully to what everyone here has to say and then go with what feel right in your heart. Each person makes the choice that is right for them and their pup. It is a very personal decision. Prayers for you, your parents and Skippy. Chari and My wonderful loving Crew
DaisyDoodle
Depending on the type of lymphoma, it can be a very treatable type of cancer. My CoCo lived 28m from when her nodes were first noticed to be enlarged. I probably should have let her go sooner because of other difficulties she had, but as far as I know w/o a necropsy, she died cancer free at 14 1/2. I recommend that you join the Circle of Grey list on Yahoo. It's primarily for GHs w osteo, but anyone w a sick grey is welcome. If you search back for my name (Cos_n_Lucks_mom) (or Cosmo's) you'll find a number of my posts. Here are links to some of them, but you need to be a member to read them. Some of them are responses to questions others had, so it's best to read them in context. 2/27/07 http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Circleo...y/message/35558 8/29/06 http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Circleo...y/message/32241 (on CCNU for salvage treatment) If you scan through my old posts about prednisone, you’ll find that I told folks that my vet recommended giving it only after starting chemo. Dr. Couto has since done research and determined that it doesn’t matter if you use pred before or after chemo is started. 12/11/04 http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Circleo...y/message/22031 8/21/04 http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Circleo...y/message/18620 (on feeding ND) 8/17/04 http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Circleo...y/message/18358 (CoCo’s Tx protocol) There are probably more than this, but these will help. I prefer to refer back to what I wrote then because it was several years ago now, and I'm not as clear on some of the details any more.
