dbullwinkel
I had posted a while back about a deep cut on Missy's foot that was not healing-with stitches. Well it is finally closing up.I have been diligent with soaking it , keeping it dry and wearing a boot when she goes outside. I have two questions though.. 1. the vet put dissolvable stitches in. looks like on is still there and the skin is healing around it. Is that a problem? 2. Her pads seem "soft" now--I guess from wearing a boot for so long. a quick walk without the boot and she had bloody pads on that foot. I cleaned and put bag balm on. What can I use to toughen up the pads? 3. this is about my other dog. I think I see what looks like a corn on his pad .No limping or pain when I touch it. should I leave it alone? or start putting something like kera solv on it? What can I use to toughen up the pads? I'd give a quick call to the vet about #1. They may do a free follow-up just to double check, or at least give you advice over the phone. As for the pads, maybe you can really take it really easy, like just up and down the driveway or just a half block walk out and back a time or two a day without the boot, building up to longer walks. For a longer walk, use the boot until she can walk a longer distance barefoot without irritation. Also, make sure you walk when it's reasonably cool, like in the morning/evening. If the sidewalk is hot, it will particularly irritate tender pads. (I'm no help on corns, sorry.)
Batmom
If the cut actually extended into the pad, it'll toughen up again all by itself, but it takes some time -- month or two? I forget. You'll probably want to keep using a boot or at least a padded baby sock on that foot for a good long while.
