  1. An Elf is a Greytalker that finds out stuff for you about your Secret Santa recipient. Say I want to buy Jammies for the hound & have no idea what size the dog would wear. You find an elf to help!

The elf would contact your Secret Santa dog's owner & tease them, quiz them, interrogate them under HOT lights (just kidding!) to find out whatever you need to know. It's lots of fun and this way your identity says SECRET until they receive your gift(s).

  2. I second what Batmom said about scrambled eggs .... scramble them up with pieces of bacon & cheese added in. When my Pup was on the last few weeks of his life with his Osteo & didn't want to eat --- the scrambled eggs worked like magic. I also was able to sneak in a little kibble scrambled up with the bacon & cheese in the eggs.

I think I need some explanations.. I'm not sure how this really works..

Could someone help please, I would like to sign up.

The BEST part of Secret Santa is you get to spoil someone else's hound  - I also like to stick in a present or two for their owner. Things can be store bought, hand crafted -or- the Greytalkers here in the Pet Merchandise section can keep a secret & mail them out for you. {Many of them run Secret Santa Specials, too :xmas } There is a package suggested $20.00 value, but many people end up going way over this ... LOL!! It's hard to not get a bit carried away when it comes to spoiling a Greyhound!

The package you send out can be filled with collars, treats, jammies, hoodies, books, stuffies, just about anything you would like to send to spoil a hound (or other pets) & their owners. I have always been floored at all the wonderful things that my hounds (& I) have received from their Secret Santas. (I still am in awe at the mosiac collar box that Rainy received last year that was handcrafted just for her!).

When you sign your Pup up, there is a comments section. This is the place you can note your hounds' sizes (for collars, jammies and the such) - and note if there is anything you don't want to receive (like no rawhide chewies) - or if you don't like purple collars on your hound ... etc. This helps your Secret Santa buy things that you and your hound like and can use.

You register under the EVENTS tab at the top of the page - there you'll also find instructions and :rules

If you have any more questions, just post them here and I'm sure they will be answered promptly by someone.

  4. Dogs pant when they're anxious, hot, or in pain. It sounds like a comfortable temp in your house, and it sounds like he didn't just move to your home, so if nothing in the environment has changed (constant thunder storms or rain? or a new pet?) I'd suspect pain.

I would suspect PAIN too .... Please Don't wait until your yearly vet visit rolls around .....

My bridge-boy PUP panted when the pain from his Osteosarcoma cancer had his bones aching. Please don't make your dog wait around in pain - get him to a vet and have him checked out.

  5. The thread about the raised feeders and all the comments about Bloat has me wondering just how common this is in Greyhounds. I don't know anyone with a greyhound that has had it bloat. Rainy always wants to do zoomies after dinner, and I make her wait because I hear the horror stories .... but - are they actually true?

I can't remember reading here about hounds ACTUALLY bloating ..... so how much of a problem is this really?

Who has owned a greyhound that has bloated - and was it due to running around after dinner?

  6. Rainy gets the Bordatella vaccine - as we go and do all the time (doggie activities) & we travel lots with her on vacations.... and you never know when a family emergency could happen & we might be forced to board her on short notice. All the boarding facilities around here require it.

  7. Yes - it is a big needle! We had Rainy Microchipped last month. We were going to have her done at GIG, but after she got her CgC there :D, I couldn't see "rewarding" her by getting a big needle. Guess it's a good thing we didn't go to the Microchipping clinic at GIG .... If I would have heard dog after dog screaming, I wouldn't have let anyone get near Rainy.

We waited until our yearly vet checkup/shot appointment - and Rainy didn't even flinch when my vet put the needle in. It was uneventful - thank goodness! Perhaps who is at the end of the needle makes a BIG difference ... inserted quick and correctly, it must not be as painful.

If I would have waitied until Rainy had to be put under for something - it might have been years before she was able to be chipped.

  8. Sounds like you found a new vet.

I agree with this .... If I thought my dog might be poisoned & MY vets office told me to wait until the next day to bring her in .... that would be the last time I called that vet. If you have what could be an emergency during office hours, you should be able to get into your vets office immediately.

Guess you're lucky you found out how they are before a REAL emergency happened! What good is a vet's office that doesn't handle emergency walk-in business from their own clients?

I'm glad the kids are doing better though!

Give Chase and LuLu a hug for me!

    Cory

  9. The thread on the too skinny Greyhound made me wonder about what the difference should be between a hounds racing weight [when they were all buff and trim] --- and what their retirement weight should be.

Rainy just had her yearly vet checkup last week, and she's gained 2 pounds in the year we've had her --- no doubt from all those treats she now gets! :colgate She raced at 60#, and here, now two years retired, she's at 65 pounds. The vet said that she looks perfect at her current weight.

How many pounds over their racing weights are your hounds? My first Greyhound, PUP, also stayed at about 5# over his racing weight his whole life - he raced at 69#, and stayed at 74#.

  10. Congratulations!

You're going to LOVE your new little lady. Once you own Greyhounds, they spoil you forever .... they ask so little and give SO much love back.

Be sure to post lots of photos when you get her home.

Have you ordered her any collars yet? LOL .... (they are addicting too)

Welcome & it's nice to "meet" you!

  11. We are so sorry for your loss - T-bone was such a handsome hound!

There's nothing anyone can say at a time like this to ease your pain, but with time, we hope that your pain will be replaced with warm and happy memories of T-Bone. We lost our Pup to Osteo in April & we still cry over the loss.

We send a gentle hug your way! :brokenheart
